Preserving Legacy, Inspiring Future:
The Mission of the MCRD Museum Foundation
Wednesday, November 4 at 12:00 Pacific Time on Zoom
November marks the 250th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps, and November’s speaker will tell us about efforts to preserve and share the Marine Corps’ rich history and heritage.
Since its founding in 1987, the MCRD Museum Foundation supports the Command Museum, better known as the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Museum in San Diego,
funding educational programs, exhibitions, and preservation efforts that honor the legacy
of Marines past and present.
One of its most exciting and meaningful projects to date is the upcoming Spirit Monument, a powerful sculpture of Joe Rosenthal’s iconic flag raising photo on Mt. Suribachi, standing as a lasting tribute to every recruit who has trained at MCRD San Diego and the spirit that defines the Marine Corps. This new monument will stand as a symbol of courage, transformation, and the enduring spirit of the Marine Corps, resonating with veterans, active-duty Marines, and future generations.
Our November speaker, Barbara Torres, is the Director of Development at the MCRD Museum Foundation. In that role, Barbara focuses on building strategic partnerships, member relations and finding resources needed to ensure the Command Museum continues to educate, inspire, and honor the Marine Corps legacy.
DO NOT MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SALUTE THE MCRD MUSEUM, WHICH HONORS THE MARINE CORPS’ LEGACY AND SHARES IT WITH VISITORS.

The Joe Rosenthal Chapter is a chapter of the national USMC Combat Correspondents Association, comprising active duty, reserve, retired and former Marines who served as Combat Correspondents or Combat Communicators on active duty or worked as a civilian in journalism, photography, broadcasting, graphic arts, advertising and public relations. The USMCCCA is the only professional organization of its kind in the US military services. Formed in 1947, the USMCCCA is a not-for-profit fraternal and patriotic organization.
The Chapter is named for our former member, Joe Rosenthal (1911-2006), the Pulitzer Prize winning San Francisco photographer who took the iconic Iwo Jima flag raising photo that raised Americans' spirits in 1945. The Joe Rosenthal Chapter Speaker Series hosts a monthly speaker on Zoom on topics of interest to our audience, including veterans issues, military history and journalism.
We produced the first public exhibit dedicated to Joe Rosenthal at the California State Library, and with the Library, we hosted a panel of distinguished journalists and editors, When the Press Goes to War (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyB_M03O81w), examining why news organizations send reporters and photographers into harm’s way.
We are petitioning the Secretary of the Navy to name a Navy ship for Joe Rosenthal,
so his name and history will not be lost to time.
Please sign the petition at www.USSJoe.org.
And we are looking for a few good members! Notify Tom of your interest.
