A person stands indoors beside a display board on a wooden easel. They are smiling at the camera and wearing a purple shirt and several colorful flower leis around their neck.

The display board features four success-story posters with photos and information about individuals and their achievements. A large whiteboard stands to the left of the display.

The room appears to be an office, classroom, or community center. Black curtains hang behind the person and display board, creating a backdrop. The floor is carpeted, and natural light is visible from a window on the left side.

The atmosphere feels welcoming and celebratory, as if the person is proudly presenting or being recognized for an accomplishment.

Camp Mānoa: Deaf Youth Leadership Camp

Day One: Leadership in Action

Day one of camp started with an important question:

What kind of leader are you?

Campers learned about four leadership styles:

Decide — leaders who take charge and make decisions
Listen — leaders who pay attention and help the group understand each other
Help — leaders who notice what needs to be done and support others
Dream — leaders who imagine new ideas and possibilities

Then campers had the chance to practice all four styles through fun and challenging activities. They worked together, solved problems, shared ideas, supported each other, and learned that leadership does not look the same for everyone.

Some leaders speak up first.
Some leaders make sure everyone is included.
Some leaders encourage the group when things get hard.
Some leaders bring creative ideas that help the team move forward.

At camp, our youth are learning that great leaders use all four styles — and that every camper has leadership strengths to offer.
