The use of aerosol mist-producing e-cigarettes is rising in the islands, particularly among young people. We are excited to announce the American Heart Association - Hawaii Division’s involvement in the Give Aloha Program this year.

Throughout the month of September, while you are out shopping at your local Foodland or Sack N Save, you can also help support our mission: to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Use your Maika’i card, along with our designation code of 77009 to make a donation to the American Heart Association-Hawaii Division.

Give Aloha is Foodland’s annual charitable giving campaign. During the month of September, Maika’i customers are invited to make a donation at checkout to their favorite non-profit organization registered in Give Aloha. Foodland and the Western Union Foundation will match each donation up to a total of $350,000 for all organizations combined.

Mahalo for your support!

American Heart Association Metro Oahu Board President Jone Flanders makes some key points in how each of us make take personal action to address the obesity crisis on a societal level. Some difficult policy initiatives will also be necessary, but to not take the necessary actions will imperil the future health and economy of our state and country.

It is important to emphasize the need to address obesity as a societal issue, not just as a children's issue. The greatest influencer of children's behavior is the actions of the adults around them

The American Heart Association today released a new study highlighting the importance of having systems of care in place to improve outcomes for patients suffering severe heart attacks. The AHA is spearheading a state stakeholders' group to optimize Hawaii's system of care and insure that patients receive the most up-to-date, science-based care seamlessly from the moment they call 9-1-1 to the time that they are treated in the proper hospital. The first key is public recognition of a heart attack and calling 9-1-1. Roughly 50% of heart attack patients currently self-deliver to an emergency room, often arriving in an ER not prepared to treat them and leading to delays in receiving the optimum care needed to improve their outcome. Don't stall, call 9-1-1.
