DLNR DAR’s Native Hawaiian Culture and History Team joined DLNR’s Hawaiʻi Conservation Kuleana podcast discussing the importance of inoa iʻa (Hawaiian fish names) and the ʻike, moʻolelo, and cultural connections carried within them.

From humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa to ʻūʻū and kala opelu, Hawaiian fish names often describe a species’ appearance, behavior, or relationship to the environment.

The episode also discusses how some traditional names were lost or altered over time and how DAR is working to research, restore, and normalize the use of proper Hawaiian fish names through ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi resources, historical newspapers, and community outreach.

Using Hawaiian names helps strengthen our pilina to Hawaiʻi’s marine resources while honoring the language and cultural knowledge passed down through generations.

June 1st is World Reef Awareness Day!

Although coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, they support roughly 25% of all marine species.

Our coral reefs support biodiversity, coastal protection, and economic value; however, coral reefs are among the most fragile ecosystems on Earth and face severe existential threats including climate change, pollution, and human impacts.

The DAR Kaua’i team has been hard at work making sure their boat is ready for the upcoming monitoring season. Our marine surveys require a lot of behind the scenes work that isn’t often featured.

Being a part of the team means that in addition to SCUBA diving, you need to be able to perform boat maintenance, troubleshoot engine issues, and captain small boats in all kinds of weather!

The DAR Kaua’i boat “Lehua” is ready for her upcoming season and we look forward to getting her out on the water soon!
