The University of Hawai‘i Insect Museum is putting out a call for submissions for its inaugural art show, a celebration of insects and their powerful role in art. Artists are invited to submit their work online for consideration by October 8, 2025. Submit your work at go.hawaii.edu/3Pm.

“Insects have inspired artists in painting, photography, sculpture and across art,” said Professor Dan Rubinoff, director of the UH Insect Museum. “This show is a new opportunity for our community to learn about the beauty and complexity of the insect world through the work of local artists.”

Denise Karabinus, executive director of Honolulu Printmakers, noted, “We love collaborating with scientists and are excited for the opportunity to learn more about insects and the scientists who study them through this exhibition.”

The opening reception will be on the evening of Friday, October 24, 2025, at Honolulu Printmakers, at 888 Mililani Street, Suite 701, Honolulu, Hawaiʻi.

The UH Insect Museum, part of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience, has no commercial role, interest, or involvement in this event.

The Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts is a proud co-sponsor of the Renkon Project a series of events celebrating connection between all living things on the 80th observance of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The public is invited to join these curated events that reflect on one of humanity’s darkest moments and emerge to celebrate the concept of pilina.

The project will premiere on Wednesday, August 6, at 7:00 PM with a free, outdoor film projection and performance at the Waikīkī War Memorial Natatorium, to honor the memory of Hiroshima.

R E N K O N ( r ĕ ŋ ’ k ô ŋ ) Renkon means lotus root in Japanese. It’s said you can see the future looking through the root passageways. In many cultures, the lotus symbolizes transformation, rooted in mud, then rising through the water to bloom. With this central metaphor, our Renkon Project uses music, dance and images to look back in history and forward into the world we are creating now.
