Today honor our past and remember the extraordinary sacrifices made by Soldiers during the Vietnam War-especially those whose courage rose to the highest standard of service and selflessness.
Thomas J McMahon was a United States Army Soldier and a posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military decoration.

Thomas J McMahon, who called the historic seaside city of Portland, Maine, home, answered his country’s call to service in 1967. He enlisted as a medical aidman, a position now known more commonly as a combat medic. By 1969 he was deployed in Vietnam to Quang Tin Province with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 196th Infantry Brigade.

On this day, March 19, 1969, he made the ultimate sacrifice while trying to protect and aid three fellow wounded Soldiers despite heavy enemy fire. Mortally wounded trying to save the third man, his award was posthumously presented in a ceremony on August 6, 1970 by President Richard Nixon to his family.

SPC4 McMahon’s story represents the valor, devotion, and sacrifice shared by so many who served during the Vietnam War. As we remember Medal of Honor recipients like him, we also honor all Soldiers who endured the hardships of that conflict. Their legacy lives on in the freedoms they defended and in the generations of Soldiers who continue to serve in their footsteps. We will always remember those who came before us, and their actions that inspire us to fight as one team, ahead of the rest.
