A wonderful Saturday morning celebrating our local agricultural community! 🌺

I had the pleasure of attending the Maui AgFest this past weekend. The highlight for me is always the annual Maui Legacy Farmers Pancake Breakfast. This year, it was fantastic to see a completely sold-out crowd gather to honor Dr. Harold Keyser.

Dr. Keyser is a former Maui County administrator and soil microbiologist with the University of Hawaiʻi College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTHAR). Having led the cooperative extension on Maui in the 2000s, his work and scientific insight have been instrumental in keeping agriculture viable on Maui.

This breakfast holds a very special place in my heart, as my grandmother was the very first honoree. The incredible turnout is a powerful reminder of how important it is that we continuously support our local agriculture and the hardworking individuals who sustain our islands.

A sincere mahalo to Warren Watanabe and the Maui County Farm Bureau for their immense hard work in organizing such a successful event. It was also great to catch up with Brian Miyamoto from the Hawaii Farm Bureau.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our local agricultural industry! 🚜🌾

It was an honor to join Governor Josh Green and Okayama Governor Ryuta Ibaragi for the official signing of the sister-state relationship between the State of Hawaiʻi and Okayama Prefecture at the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH) Japan Sister Summit .

Following the signing, we gathered with members of the Okayama Prefectural Assembly and the Okayama Kenjin-kai for a beautiful celebratory ceremony. This historic partnership represents the continuation of a bond built over generations through immigration, cultural exchange, and shared values.

These ties are especially meaningful to our Maui communities. Our shared history dates back to 1868 when Sentaro Ishii, a samurai from Okayama, arrived with the first wave of Japanese immigrants and settled on Maui to become a respected community leader.

This agreement is also deeply personal to me. I first met Governor Ibaragi during a Council of Local Authorities for International Relations visit to Okayama, where his vision and enthusiasm left a lasting impression. Our paths crossed again last October when we served on a panel together at the U.S.-Japan Council meeting here in Hawaiʻi. We discussed his desire to form a sister-state relationship, and I committed to him then that I would help to make it a reality.

During this legislative session, it was a privilege to work alongside my colleagues to sponsor the resolutions that helped to accelerate this partnership. I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who championed this effort to make this day possible.

I am fully committed to expanding our relationship economically, culturally, and educationally. May this sister-state agreement honor the generations who came before us and create new opportunities for friendship and collaboration for many years to come

A new chapter for our justice system on Maui. ⚖️

It was an honor to attend the swearing-in ceremony for Annalisa M. Bernard Lee, the newest Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Vladimir Devens, marking a significant milestone for our local courts.

Judge Bernard Lee brings exceptional experience to this role. She is a graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law and most recently served our community as a District Court judge right here in the Second Circuit. Her deep commitment to upholding the rule of law with fairness and respect will serve our island well as she takes on this critical responsibility on the bench.

Congratulations to Judge Bernard Lee! We are profoundly grateful for her continued dedication to public service and the people of Hawaiʻi.

Closing out the school year with a truly spectacular showcase! ☀️

Today marks the official last day of school for all Department of Education students across our state, and Wailuku Elementary School celebrated in style with their 4th Annual Lōkahi Day. The students took us on a wonderful creative tour around the world with their performances, perfectly capturing this year’s beautiful theme: "Hawaiʻi Kuʻu Home, Kuʻu Kulaiwi" (Hawaiʻi My Home, My Beloved Land).

I want to extend a sincere mahalo to Dr. Nikan Arapoff for his excellent leadership, along with the dedicated teachers and staff who organized such a meaningful event. Congratulations to all the students for their hard work on stage!

Wishing all of our keiki, families, and educators a safe and relaxing summer break!

I had a wonderful time attending the Pōmaikaʻi Elementary School Hōʻike. It was a beautiful showcase of our students' hard work and dedication.

During the program, Principal Tim Shim shared a touching reminder: this year's 5th-grade class actually entered kindergarten during the height of the COVID pandemic. Seeing them perform so confidently on stage really puts into perspective just how far we have come. It is a true testament to the incredible resilience of our keiki and our entire community.

I want to extend a sincere mahalo to Principal Shim for his steadfast leadership, as well as to all the dedicated teachers, staff, and ʻohana who have supported these students through such a unique educational journey. We are so proud of all the performers! ✨

The spirit of community was truly alive this weekend in Central Maui. 🌺

I had the distinct honor of attending the 57th ANNUAL BARRIO FIESTA®at the Binhi at Ani Filipino Community Center this past Saturday evening. As the longest-running Filipino fiesta in the United States, it is wonderful to see so many people from across our island taking part in this beloved annual tradition.

A particularly special moment for me was participating in the presentation of the Outstanding Housekeepers Awards. Our housekeepers work tirelessly behind the scenes to uphold the high standards of our hospitality industry, and it is incredibly important that we recognize their dedication and hard work. They are a foundational part of our local economy and our community.

Mahalo to the Binhi at Ani Filipino Community Center and all of the organizers and volunteers who put together such a successful weekend filled with wonderful food, cultural entertainment, and fellowship. It is a privilege to celebrate the rich history and enduring contributions of our Filipino community here on Maui.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day. Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

It was a profound privilege to attend the annual Maui Memorial Day service this morning at the Makawao Veterans Cemetery. We were deeply moved by the powerful words of our keynote speaker, Bo Mahoe, as our community gathered to pay our respects and reflect on the true cost of our freedoms.

A special mahalo goes to Chelsea Fernandez, Sharon Banaang, and all the dedicated individuals whose hard work made this beautiful and solemn event possible. Providing a space for our island to come together and properly honor our fallen heroes is incredibly important.

May we never forget their sacrifice, today and every day. 🇺🇸🌺

What a spectacular evening of culture and community! I had a wonderful time attending the Maui Matsuri Japanese Festival this weekend at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College, and it was a distinct privilege to step up as your emcee for the final portion of the night.

The entertainment was truly phenomenal. We were treated to incredible performances by Maui Taiko, Mikan Music, Nakayama Minyo Kai, and Zenshin Daiko. We were also deeply honored to welcome a wonderful performing group visiting all the way from Izumisano, Osaka, Japan, who brought so much energy and joy to the stage.

Events of this scale do not happen without immense dedication and hard work behind the scenes. I want to extend a sincere mahalo to the festival co-chairs, Kay Fukumoto, Tiffany Iida, and Jen Sumida, for their tireless efforts in organizing such a successful gathering. You have all done a fantastic job of bringing the theme of "Tomo" (friend) to life and ensuring that we continue to perpetuate these rich cultural traditions for our keiki.

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us and support the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui. I am already looking forward to next year! 🌺🇯🇵

So incredibly proud of the students at Puu Kukui Elementary School! I had a wonderful time attending their Hōʻike, where every single grade did an absolutely fantastic job. It was such a joy to watch our keiki shine on stage.

What always impresses me about Puʻu Kukui is how they seamlessly incorporate the themes of their 7 Habits of effective leaders into their program. It is truly inspiring to see our students not only embracing our culture through mele and hula but also practicing essential leadership skills like synergizing and being proactive.

A special mahalo to Principal Chad Okamoto and his entire team, along with all the teachers, staff, and ʻohana, for putting together such a beautiful showcase and for continuously empowering our youth to lead by example. We are so proud of our student leaders! ✨

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Iao Intermediate 6th Grade May Hōʻike yesterday morning at the Wailuku Gymnasium. The theme, “Hoʻoulu Lāhui,” was beautifully brought to life by our keiki.

The performance was truly impressive! The sheer amount of material the students needed to learn and perform—featuring a culminating show of mele, hula, and oli learned throughout the entire 2025-2026 school year—was absolutely great. They clearly put a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication into their showcase, and it showed in every single number.

I also want to give a special recognition to student Kaili Smith for the stunning artwork on the program cover.

Mahalo to the teachers, staff, and ʻohana at Iao for guiding and supporting these students. It is always a joy to see our youth embracing and perpetuating our Hawaiian culture right here in Wailuku. We are so proud of all of you! ✨
