Senior Medicare Patrols (SMPs) empower and assist Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report health care fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education. Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). SMPs’ work is in three main areas: 1. Conduct Outreach and Education; 2. Engage Volunteers; and 3. Receive Beneficiary Inquiries.

The Senior Medicare Patrol is a federally funded program under the U.S. Administration on Aging which has been in existence in Hawaii since 1997. SMP is housed in the State of Hawaii Executive Office on Aging.

It is important to remember that:
Medicare beneficiaries receive a Medicare number and card automatically upon enrollment
Medicare cards do not expire
Medicare will not call beneficiaries to offer a new card or request information in order to issue a new card
Beneficiaries who lose their Medicare card can request a new one from the Social Security Administration
