Hawaii Women's Legislative Caucus

Hawaii Women's Legislative Caucus The Women's Legislative Caucus of the State of Hawaii is a coalition of women legislators from both the Hawaii State Senate & House of Representatives.

Encompassing women legislators' viewpoints from both the Senate and the House of Representatives, the Women's Legislative Caucus of the State of Hawai'i was established over 20 years ago to advocate bills on behalf of the women of the state of Hawai'i. Through a careful voting and selection process, those bills that pass more than 75% of the WLC members' votes are added to the Caucus' official pac

kage, which has, in previous years, included subjects such as human trafficking, health, domestic abuse, and education. In addition to proposing potential future legislation, the members of the Women's Legislative Caucus further their mission through community outreach. The legislators demonstrate their support for community organizations by hosting events, like the Easter Basket drive held every year, in which both communities and organizations are benefited. Through its existence, the Women's Legislative Caucus strives to assist women on both a legislative and community level. The members of the WLC will further work together to promote the interest of Hawaii's women and improve the overall quality of life here in Hawaii.

Patricia Fukuda Saiki was recognized today by Representative Diamond Garcia at the State Capitol. She was born and raised in Hilo and graduated from Hilo High School in 1948. Her first job was at TPA Aloha Airlines flying weekends and holidays for double pay and earned hazard pay flying tourists over volcano. This work helped pay her way through college at the University of Hawaii. She got her first teaching job at Punahou where she became known as a very outspoken and driven person. While teaching a Kaimuki Middle School, Pat approached the HGEA union and organized their first teachers' chapter before HSTA was ever around.

Pat's colleagues encouraged her to run for office and so she did and since then Hawaii has never been the same. Pat served as a House Representative from 1968-1974. While in the State house, she was appointed by President Richard Nixon to the national council of women. Upon returning from DC, Pat asked LRB and HMIR attorneys to draft an equal rights amendment and 28 other bills working in a Bi-partisan manner to have these bills passed. In those years women could not have credit cards in their own name, they couldn't own a mortgage in her own name, divorced women needed permission from their ex-husbands on many things and women who were pregnant couldn't get paid maternity leave. Because of the hard work of Pat Saiki those bills passed and forever changed the lives of women in Hawai'i.

Pat then served in the State Senate from 1972-1982. While chairing the higher education committee, Pat oversaw the creation of Kapiolani Community College and the UH Medical School. That same year, she oversaw the construction of the law school library. Pat was elected to and served in the US Congress from 1986-1990. While in Congress, Pat reached out to President George HW Bush and asked him to order the US Military to stop bombing Kahoolawe and worked to get the island back in the State's control. Hawaii is forever grateful for your service.
