Communities grow stronger when their youth are empowered to shape the future. For military-connected teens, however, that empowerment can be challenging to achieve. Frequent relocations, school transitions, and family deployments often disrupt their social and emotional well-being, creating barriers...

My first Military ‘Ohana Day was a huge success — and an experience I will always remember. We welcomed 30 military-connected families to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Waimānalo Research Station for a day filled with aloha, culture, and connection.

Families began their visit in our plumeria orchard, where they learned about the orchard’s history, the legacy of Dr. Richard Criley, and the cultural significance of lei making in Hawai‘i. After a hands-on education about plumeria, families picked blossoms together and learned how to kui lei (sew a lei).

One mother shared with me, “Thank you so much. This is very special for us as a family. My youngest son is 17, and this may be our last youth event together.” I later learned that they had only recently arrived in Hawai‘i, having PCSed just a month ago.
Her words were a beautiful reminder of how meaningful these moments can be for our military families. My heart is full.

Rebuilding a program from the ground up is a long and challenging process, but the rewards make it worthwhile!

Mahalo nui to:
🌿 Jari Sugano and the UH CTAHR-Oʻahu team for their support
🌿 Jeremy Elliott-Engel for always supporting me... since day one!
🌿 Jeff Goodwin, Judy Scoville-Layfield, Jennifer (Jen) Yamane, Jessica Radovich, Patrick Williams, Christine Hanakawa
🌿 College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience at UH-Manoa volunteers who assisted military families all day: Jessie Kai, Tyler Goodearly, Kim, The Radovich girls, Audrey (UGC Intern), and her sister Katrina (who is visiting from Scotland). Did I miss anyone? I love my CTAHR 'ohana!
🌿 Doreen Sokolowski, my dear friend and very accomplished lei maker, who led the lei-making portion of the workshop
🌿 A special mahalo to 808 Urban for partnering with me to design a beautiful lei-themed coloring book, which was gifted to every youth participant as a meaningful keepsake from the day.
🌿 The 4-H Military Partnership and Air Force Child and Youth Programs for funding and making this event possible.

Together, we’re helping families feel at home in Hawai‘i through culture, community, and the spirit of Aloha through 4-H. 💚

Love how 4-H is welcomed into schools across the nation. Each looks a little different, but some have 4-H Fridays... one hour to work on hands-on, experiential learning on many other topics, allowing students to gain life and practical experience in things they would have missed due to many different situations.

We would love to do this here in Hawaii, with our schools located on military bases. We would love to serve our military-connected youth this way. Here's to the future of 4-H Fridays in schools on Oahu!
