Congratulations to the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Kimball (WMSL 757) on winning first place in this year's Cutter Force's Eight Bells video contest for their entry, "Letter to Sumner Kimball" highlighting the theme, "Underway as Before, Steaming into the Future," celebrating the bold advancements of Force Design 2028 while paying tribute to the enduring seagoing traditions that define our service.

Before chronometers, satellites and cell phones, time was kept on the ship using a half-hour glass and a bell. One of the ship’s youngest crewmembers would strike a bell every 30 minutes as they turned over the half-hour glass. This practice evolved into the tradition of striking the bell at every half-hour during the watch, increasing from one bell strike for the first 30 minutes, two strikes marking the first hour, and so on. A standard four-hour watch ends at eight bells, hence the phrase “eight bells and all is well” when referring to completing a watch with no incident.

The award comes as we commemorate the 51st anniversary of the Cutterman Insignia, which was created on Oct. 18, 1974, to recognize the contributions and qualifications of our personnel underway and out to sea. Bravo Zulu, Kimball Crew!

This past Sunday, USCGC Kimball transformed into a Haunted Ship to celebrate Halloween! The crew decorated the cutter with eerie lighting, cobwebs, and spooky scenes, while some even dressed up as creepy characters to bring the haunted vibe to life. We offered two versions of the haunted house—one spooky and one friendly—so everyone could join in on the fun. A trunk-or-treat added extra excitement for kids and families. It was a great way to get into the Halloween spirit and enjoy some creative teamwork.

Culinary Specialists (CS) are trained in all things food, from preparation to accounting and logistics. CSs keep Kimball’s crew fed by preparing four meals a day to the highest standards of nutrition, taste, and food safety. Before the food even hits the pan, CSs are responsible for the intricate details of logistics, accounting, menu planning, and inventory management to keep pantries well stocked. CSs are trained in a variety of culinary arts to keep the menu fresh and morale high! We’d like to think we have some of the best CSs in the Coast Guard! In fact, one of our CSs helped to lead the Coast Guard to a victory in the Armed Services Culinary Competition last year!

CGC KIMBALL and NOAA Ship OSCAR DYSON engaged in reciprocal tours in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, allowing crews to experience each other's vessels firsthand. Following the tours, officers from both ships gathered aboard the KIMBALL for a dinner, fostering collaboration and the exchange of stories and expertise between federal partners. OSCAR DYSON is an ultra-quiet fisheries survey vessel built to collect data on fish populations, conduct marine mammal and seabird surveys, and study marine ecosystems. This vessel is a major factor in managing Alaska po***ck, one of the world’s largest commercial fisheries. The USCG and NOAA share common goals to preserve living marine resources and support responsible fishing.
