Aloha Jennifer Waggoner the League of Women Voters of Honolulu continue to work more more openness in the decisions that affect the taxpayer here on Oahu. Our local government is the Honolulu City Council. We follow them closely as they work with HART the Honolulu Area Rapid Transit Project which has become a beau-mouth of expense over the years. Contracts are awarded, money spent and projects done to further the development of the rail and expecting full and open disclosure in this project has been difficult over the decades actually.
We now go to court next month to see if the project will be moving forward. Huge amounts of money are spent to promote rail. Huge amounts of money are spent in an attempt to get the City and County of Honolulu to be accountable for these expenditures. It is an ongoing conundrum
In our very recent, in fact Tuesday election we had two choices for Mayor, one who seems to be for rail pretty much as it has been. The other candidate, a man of considerable political experience in this state, in fact one of our Governors. Some believe that the choice of Mayor was a mandate on rail, and perhaps it was. That being said. This only affects Oahu, not the rest of the State, so League of Women Voters Honolulu has a firm position over the years.
We also had two City and County of Honolulu Charter Changes on the ballot.
We did not have time to develop a position, but we did analyze the two changes and did a paper for the electorate so they would have no surprises when they went in the voting booth.
