This is the Story of the Thunderbird.
Local mythology of the Great Orphan Tsunami of 1700.
"The Present is the Key to the Past"
- James Hutton, the Father of Geology, 1785.
The same holds true vice versa. The Past is a key to the Present, or in our case, the Future. 320 years ago, the Cascadia Seismic Zone (CSZ) ruptured from Mendocino CA to Vancouver Island BC, releasing tremendous seismic energy, generating a devastating tsunami both locally and across the world. We know this will happen again due to the diligent work of many, sleuthing clues from the land as well as the story.

Eleven years ago the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant complex was inundated with 15 meters of seawater when the Great Japan Earthquake generated a tsunami that easily breached its 5.7 meter protective seawall. The damage the plant sustained was far more severe than that from the Mw 9.1 earthquake and unleashed a series of events that led to core meltdowns and massive release of radiation from three of its reactors. Learn what happened in the hours and days after the waves struck, and why water poses such a threat to nuclear facilities.

A massive volcanic eruption has occurred on the Island of Tonga in the South Pacific. This event is extremely dangerous for those on and near the area closest to the eruption. A tsunami has been generated that we are closely monitoring as it crosses the Pacific.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a Tsunami Advisory for the State of Hawaii. A tsunami is currently being observed by all Hawaiian Islands' Emergency Management. We are relieved that there is no reported damage and only minor flooding through-out the islands.

The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a Tsunami Advisory for Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California.

A Tsunami Advisory means that there could be damaging wave action in harbors and on beaches. Stay away from the shoreline until local Emergency Managers have given the 'All Clear'.

Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Island of La Palma, Canary Islands, is currently erupting. The Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Tsunami Warning System is monitoring the situation.

The volcanic activity associated with the Cumbre Vieja volcano does not pose a tsunami threat to the Caribbean Sea and adjacent regions at this time. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center continues to monitor all available data for tsunamis or tsunami-causing phenomena.

If PTWC determines that the situation has changed and it detects a significant tsunami from the Canary Islands, or an event that may cause one, then it will issue appropriate tsunami alerts to the nations and territories within the Caribbean Sea and adjacent regions.

The National Tsunami Warning Center is monitoring tsunami threats associated with the east coasts of the United States and Canada.
