In preparation for the coming dry season, Operation Hoʻopauahi strives to ensure that we are well prepared for wildfires and can take necessary measures to prevent them to the best of our ability.

With the help of the Army National Guard, we have three helicopters ready to perform water drops and evacuate people in the event of a wildfire.

Stay safe, stay vigilant and remember that your Hawaiʻi National Guard is always ready, and always there.

Today, we announce a leadership transition at the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR).

After years of dedicated service to Hawaiʻi, Dawn Chang will retire as DLNR chairperson and director on July 1.

I have appointed Ryan Kanakaʻole to serve as DLNR chairperson and director. I have also appointed David Day to serve as first deputy, effective July 7. Both bring extensive legal experience, deep knowledge of state government and a strong commitment to public trust responsibilities.

As we look ahead, I am confident Ryan and David will build on DLNR’s important work to steward Hawaiʻi’s lands, waters and cultural resources for future generations.

Mahalo, Dawn, for your service, and congratulations to Ryan and David on their new roles.

This week, we’re tackling some heavy issues that go to the core strength of our communities.

With attorney fees for Maui wildfire survivors now capped lower than anywhere else in the world, more settlement dollars can go where they belong — directly to survivors and families. Combined with efforts like the One ʻOhana Fund, we’re helping carry the weight of recovery and ensuring Maui continues to grow stronger every day.

We’re also working to keep Hawaiʻi healthy and resilient by helping residents maintain access to healthcare and avoid gaps in coverage. A strong community is built by lifting each other up.

As hurricane season begins, we can’t afford to let our guard down. The best time to build resilience is before a storm arrives. Don’t wait for an emergency to become a heavyweight challenge — prepare now.

Wildfire season preparation is also underway, with the Hawaiʻi National Guard helping do some of the heavy lifting to reduce risk and strengthen readiness across the state.
Recovery. Preparedness. Healthcare. Resilience.

Together, we’re proving that Hawaiʻi’s greatest strength isn’t what we can lift alone — it’s how much we can carry together.
