Last week's blessing of Ke Kauhale ʻo Luhia marked an exciting new chapter for Hawaiʻi's first intergenerational kauhale community.

While the village has served residents for more than 30 years, this next chapter was made possible through the addition of 20 new homes and the collective effort of partners who came together to strengthen and expand the community.

HomeAid Hawaiʻi served as lead developer, but our role is really about bringing people together around a shared purpose. By working alongside builders, trade partners, donors, volunteers, and community organizations, we help reduce construction costs so more resources can go toward creating housing opportunities for those who need them most.

Together, we transformed 21 underutilized parking stalls into 20 new homes for local residents. Because so many people stepped up to help, more than $650,000 was saved on this project compared to a traditional construction approach.

Mahalo nui to everyone who shared their time, talent, resources, and aloha.

We are thrilled to introduce The Kauhale Collection, created in collaboration with NOHO HOME by Jalene Kanani.

This beautiful home collection honors the people and places dedicated to creating spaces rooted in aloha. Its design and inspiration are deeply rooted in the values of kalo, hānai, and kauhale, reflecting themes of nourishment, connection, and collective care. Inspired by traditional ʻŌhe kāpala (printing bamboo) motifs, the collection’s design weaves repetition and rhythm to tell a story of shelter, belonging, and resilience. Furthermore, a portion of all proceeds will directly support the Kauhale Initiative, creating pathways to housing for those most in need.

It takes a village — and what a village showed up yesterday at the upcoming Waimanalo Kauhale.

Volunteers from Hope Center, , and ASI Hawaii joined us out in beautiful Waimānalo to help prepare for our new upcoming kauhale community. Together, they set up planter boxes, assembled tables, installed fire extinguishers, and so much more.

This is what community looks like. Mahalo nui to everyone who gave their time and heart to the new Kauhale. 🤙

“The greatest thing is peace.” - Keliʻi Losano at Kīpūola Kauhale

CHANGING LIVES ON MAUI: Six months after it opened, residents at Kīpūola Kauhale in Kahului say they’re finding more than a roof over their heads.

Micah, a Maui-born father living at Kīpūola Kauhale, shares his journey from homelessness and addiction to sobriety and rebuilding his life. Now 11 months sober, he is focused on becoming the role model his kids deserve and proving that with support and a second chance, change is possible.

Mahalo for sharing your story, Micah.

Taking you behind the build at Waimānalo Kauhale.

This project sits alongside the Waimānalo Emergency Shelter, formerly known as Weinberg Village, which has served the community for over 30 years. Working with experienced local contractors, the team is repurposing 40 underutilized parking stalls to create 20 new homes for individuals.

With individuals moving into the new kauhale units, more space is created for families at the existing shelter.

As we get closer to completion, you can start to see it come together, from foundations to the homes and shared spaces. Every step has been thoughtful and intentional.

At Kīpūola Kauhale, housing is just the beginning.

Last week, the first cohort of the BIA-Hawaii PACT program graduated on-site at the kauhale. This is an early step in putting the model into practice.

Seven individuals completed the six week pre-apprenticeship training. Four are residents of the community. Three secured job offers before graduation.

Through partnership with BIA Hawaii and support from industry and community leaders, residents trained where they live, gaining hands on experience and industry recognized certifications.

This work connects housing with access to jobs, skills, and long-term stability.

Mahalo to BIA Hawaii and all partners who made this possible, and congratulations to the graduates.

The first cohort graduated from the Building Industry Association of Hawaiʻi’s (BIA Hawaiʻi) Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Training (PACT) program, held on-site at Kīpūola Kauhale in Kahului last week.

Harold “Keliʻi” Losano knows what it means to lose everything. For years, his life was shaped by addiction, instability, and nights without a place to feel safe.

But this is not that chapter.

At Kīpūola Kauhale on Maui, something has shifted.
He wakes up with somewhere to go.
He goes to work.
He’s rebuilding, one day at a time.

“I feel human again.”

This was the story shared just before Keliʻi stepped onto the stage in front of more than 400 people at last week’s gala. Not as someone defined by what he went through, but as someone showing what is possible on the other side.

With support, time, and a place to begin again, he is working toward something simple and powerful. A home of his own. A life rooted in dignity.

Mahalo nui, Keliʻi, for sharing your story. Your vulnerability inspired all of us and reminded us why this work matters.
