Grasshopper Fire Update — August 5, 2026
Acres: 39,439
Percent Containment: 20%
Personnel: 1,323

Hood River County Summary
Yesterday: On the northwest perimeter, the fire reached Bennett Pass and continued around Lookout Mountain as crews strengthened contingency lines north of Flag Point. Although the fire remains several miles away, structural task forces completed triage around Mt. Hood Meadows Resort.

Today: The fire’s northwestern edge is projected to move toward Bennett Pass and the Badger Bowl area. A reduction in fire intensity is expected as the fire approaches the Highway 35 corridor, and there are currently no closures to the highway. Hand crews and dozers will continue fire suppression east of Highway 35.

Weather: Winds will be lighter today but remain easterly with hotter, drier conditions. A shift to westerly winds is expected from mid-afternoon to early evening, reducing fire spread potential toward the Highway 35 corridor.

Evacuations: There are no changes to Hood River County evacuation notices. Check your location: https://perimetermap.com.

Closures: There is a closure area on Mt. Hood National Forest: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r06/mthood/alerts/closure-place-grasshopper-fire

A Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) is in place for the fire area. Unauthorized drone (UAS) flights pose serious risks to firefighters. Aerial firefighting is suspended when unauthorized UAS are in the area.

Forest Road 44 south of Forest Road 17 is temporarily closed. A detour is available via Brooks Meadow up to Highway 35.

Evacuation levels in Hood River County have been updated for the Grasshopper Fire. The following evacuation levels are in place:

🔴 Level 3 — Go Now
• South of NF44 to the east of Hwy. 35, and south of upper Cooper Spur at Hwy. 35 to the west, south to milepost 63 on Hwy. 35., including Mount Hood Meadows, Hood River Meadows, Bennet Pass, Lookout Mountain, Palisade Point, Gunsight Butte, Badger Butte, Elk Mountain, and Tamanawas Falls.

🟡 Level 2 — Be Set
• Mill Creek Buttes
• White River
• West of Hwy. 35 between milepost 77 on the north and upper Cooper Spur Rd. on the south, including Cooper Spur Ski Resort and Cooper Spur Rd.

🟢 Level 1 — Be Ready
• County line, west to Laurence Lake, from Culbertson Rd. and milepost 80.5 in the north to milepost 77 in the south.

Evacuation levels are changing because a Red Flag Warning is in effect, and unpredictable weather may cause fire activity to increase quickly. East winds yesterday and today pushed the fire onto the ridges above Highway 35 near Mount Hood Meadows and Bennett Pass. These levels were increased to keep residents safe and to give fire crews room to work safely.

Now is the time to start thinking about your evacuation plan. Know where you would go, what you would take, and how you would get out. Fire conditions can change quickly and without warning. If you feel unsafe or see immediate danger, do not wait for an official evacuation order — leave.

Odell, Ore. – On Sunday, July 26th, 2026, a Hood River County Sheriff’s Office deputy and civilian were shot at while speaking about an incident that occurred at a wedding in the 4300 block of Summit Drive in Odell, Oregon. No one was struck by the gunfire, and a subject was later taken into custody for charges related to the incident.

Shortly after midnight on Sunday, July 26th, 2026, dispatch received a call about a male subject who threatened to shoot another male subject at a wedding party, then left. No one was struck, and the deputy quickly got innocent parties safely behind vehicles.

Other deputies arrived on scene, as well as units from the Hood River City Police. The shooter was not immediately located. In the investigation that followed it was determined that probable cause existed to arrest Abraham Delgado Bucio (29) of The Dalles, Oregon, who had threatened partygoers, and then attempted to shoot one of them, but the gun did not discharge.

A possible associated vehicle was spotted by the Hood River City Police and followed into Wasco County, where units from the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office, The Dalles City Police, and Hood River City Police stopped it.
