September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) joins with the Nine Federally Recognized Tribes of Oregon, Tribal Nations across the country, and partners to honor the resilience of Tribal children, families, and communities impacted by federal Indian Boarding School system.

Orange Shirt Day is both a remembrance and a call to action. It acknowledges the painful history of the boarding schools, the lasting impact on generations of Tribal people, and the incredible strength of survivors. It also reminds us of our shared responsibility to listen, learn, and work toward reconciliation by supporting Tribal sovereignty and self-determination.

We encourage everyone to take time today to reflect on the stories of survivors and honor their courage.

🎉This is what community building across Oregon looks like!

122 self-advocates, friends, and family members from 5 Local Alliances and 6 counties — with folks traveling from as far east as Union — came together at OMSI for a day full of connection, self-advocacy, creativity, and fun!

From tie-dying to exploring awesome exhibits, the day was all about building community, sharing experiences, and making memories 🙌✨
