The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon, 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep, that cuts the only sea level route through the Cascade Mountain Range. The Columbia River Gorge was designated as a National Scenic Area in 1986 by Congress. A natural wonder and a critical transportation corridor, the Gorge is home to 75,000 people, resource dependent communities, farms and schools. T

he National Scenic Area is managed by the USDA Forest Service based on the National Scenic Area Act, which calls for protection and enhancement of the scenic, cultural, recreational and natural resources of the Gorge and local economic development consistent with that protection. The National Forest Foundation, chartered by Congress, engages Americans in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 193-million-acre National Forest System and administers private gifts of funds and land for the benefit of the National Forests.
