Dear Lake Cushman Community,
We want to share an important update regarding Lake Cushman reservoir levels as we head into the summer season.
Due to several years of below-normal rainfall and snowpack, Washington State has declared a statewide drought emergency. This winter, snowpack in the Cushman basin remained well below normal, and inflows to the lake this spring are projected to be among the lowest on record.

As a result, Lake Cushman is unlikely to reach or maintain its typical summer elevation levels this year. Tacoma Power is taking steps to help preserve water levels, but ongoing requirements to maintain river flows for fish habitat and regulatory compliance may still impact reservoir levels throughout the summer.
We encourage all residents and visitors to stay informed and plan accordingly for changing lake conditions.

You can also view current lake levels and river flow data anytime at:

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this challenging water year

A note from Olympic National Park:

Olympic National Park is working with Olympic National Forest to assess infrastructure conditions and implement repairs prior to reopening the Staircase Campground and developed area.

The Bear Gulch Fire left a patchwork of burn scars that increase the risks of landslides, rockfall, and treefall in the Staircase developed area. Though firefighters removed some treefall hazards during the incident, additional repairs are needed due to winter impacts.

As spring conditions allow, road crews, hazard tree specialists, water‑quality teams, and trail crews are continuing this work. Park teams are repairing and stabilizing the Rapids Loop Trail, mitigating hazard trees in the developed area, and clearing road drainage infrastructure.

Additionally, the park is coordinating with Olympic National Forest to reopen FS-24 and ensure visitor services will be available. The wilderness areas surrounding Staircase will need to remain closed until crews can survey and repair trails, bridges, backcountry privies.

Olympic National Park is committed to reopening Staircase as soon as it is safe to do so and will post updates on our Alerts and Conditions webpage: https://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/conditions.htm

Respectfully,
Molly Pittman
