ANNOUNCEMENT! New Trail Opens at Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site🌳
We are excited to announce the completion of the Victory Loop Trail, a new formalized recreation trail at Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site. In recognition of on June 6, we welcome everyone to get outside and explore this new unpaved 1-mile trail as part of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation's 250th commemoration of the American Revolution.
The Victory Loop Trail offers new opportunities for non-motorized recreational activities at Bennington Battlefield. The trail is situated along fields and woodland edges with access to the Walloomsac River, providing great opportunities for fishing and birding. The riverside trail crosses flat terrain, making it a less strenuous alternative to other more moderate trails at the battlefield and a cross-country skiing option in the winter months. Pets are allowed on the historic site’s trails and must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet and under control at all times.
Parking for the Victory Loop Trail is located on the grounds of 30 Caretakers Road in Hoosick, NY with trail access behind the Caretaker’s House. Hours of operation for this trail are 8am to sunset. There are no public restrooms available at this location. Restrooms are available at the Battlefield Lane area across Route 67.
The new trail covers ground that was hotly contested in the 1777 Battle of Bennington. After the British positions collapsed under the American attack of the first engagement, General John Stark pursued the retreating Crown forces into these fields. It was here that the British forces were cut off and forced to surrender. Previously, public access to the Retreat Fields was limited. The installation of a formalized trail now provides an opportunity for visitors to traverse the landscape of this significant moment in the battle’s history.
