Plenty of people pay to work out in a gym, but not too many people pay $2,000. That’s exactly what two people did Friday night at the fourth annual Denim & Dining fundraiser for the Hoover City Schools Foundation. Find out why and see the photo gallery from the event.

Harvard's Ben Abercrombie inspiring others in fight back from devastating injury

Harvard's Ben Abercrombie is inspiring others in fight back from devastating injury! We are proud that he is an alum of Hoover High School.

It is an arduous journey for Harvard football player Ben Abercrombie, who — nearly three months after a devastating neck injury in his first game as a collegian — can’t move his arms or legs and uses a ventilator to breathe. But the Hoover, Ala., native continues to inspire those who know him....

Major news on the Ben Abercrombie front, and your prayers are working! Ben's dad Marty has sent out his latest update, and two developments have taken place: Ben can feel sensations in his upper back and upper chest, and if things go as planned, Ben will get to go home to Hoover next week! Spread the word, and wish Ben your best, as he monitors this post! Here is Marty's latest message:
"The new year has started off very busy for the Abercrombie family. Ben has finished his first round of rehab here at the Shepherd Center so we have been making plans to come home. Over the course of the last few weeks, Ben has indicated he can feel some changes happening in his body. He can feel sensations particularly in his upper chest and upper back that he was not able to feel before. He is also experiencing more nerve pain throughout his body. Another positive development is that Ben has begun to initiate more breaths. This development has driven necessary vent changes that has kept us here at Shepherd Center a little longer but it is a trade off we will take! Where this leads only God knows. Please continue to ask our Lord to touch Ben and other SCI warriors here at the Shepherd Center with his healing spirit.
We want to say a special thank you to the Atlanta Falcons organization for hosting Ben at their game last Sunday versus the Carolina Panthers. It was an amazing experience for Ben and our family to meet so many great people. It was incredible to see both Atlanta and Carolina players wearing “Stand Up for Ben” bracelets during the game. I also had the opportunity last Friday to attend a Birmingham Bulls Hockey game and accept an unbelievable donation for the Ben Abercrombie recovery fund from the Bulls jersey auction a few weeks ago. Thank you to the Birmingham Bulls organization and their fans!
Ben and our family are looking forward to returning home to our house in Hoover next week. Signature Homes and their vendor partners have done an amazing job making our house a safe and comfortable place for Ben to come home and recover. I get emotional every time that I think about how wonderful our Hoover community has been to our family. I promised Ben I will try to hold it together when we pull into the neighborhood but that will be a hard promise to keep! We hope to see our neighbors on Monday but we trust the great doctors at Shepherd to release Ben when everything comes together. We will spread the word when we see the “Sweet Home Alabama” sign on Interstate 20."

It's Turn Back Time Thursday. We're spotlighting famous graduates of the Hoover school system. Today it's a W.A. Berry graduate who led the Auburn Tigers as its quarterback for several seasons - including the 1993 undefeated one. Stan White still sports his orange and blue as a radio commentator for games, while operating his own insurance business. Go Stan! Go Bucs!

Good morning! I hope that you can offer your encouragement and prayers to Hoover's Ben Abercrombie who remains paralyzed over 8 weeks after being injured in a Harvard football game. Ben's father Marty released this latest information late Monday night and I wanted to share it with you. Please don't forget Ben as he's fighting as hard as he can. The pictures shown here are of Ben receiving a Georgia Bulldogs jersey. As the father of a healthy 19-year-old son it breaks my heart to see what Ben is going through. The entire Abercrombie family monitors this page so feel free to leave a comment. Here is Marty's update:
"Here at the Shepherd Center Ben has had the opportunity to meet some amazing people that have battled spinal cord injuries for much longer than him. Their consistent message to Ben is continue to work hard, be patient and have faith that recovery will come. One recent visitor that is 2 years out from his injury participates in rehab therapy at Shepherd several times a week and is still making progress in his recovery! Please pray for these other Warriors at the Shepherd Center that are keeping the faith and inspiring everyone around them.
Ben had a couple of days last week where he did not feel very good but by the end of the week he made a strong recovery. We are thankful that he is currently breathing room air through the ventilator an d not needing supplemental oxygen. We are also thankful that he is off all antibiotics right now and for the first time in 8 weeks he does not have an IV needle stuck in his arm! For now Ben and the therapists can focus on activities to hopefully wake up those connections that were lost during the injury and also prepare him to live a productive and rewarding life while his body heals.
Please keep praying for Ben’s recovery and keep sending the letters, videos and CaringBridge posts of encouragement. This one Old Testament verse was mentioned in several letters last week and reminded us that God has special plans for Ben! “For surely I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope” Jeremiah 29:11.

Please keep former Hoover Buc Ben Abercrombie in your thoughts and prayers as today (Wednesday) is a big day for Ben & his family. Ben is being transferred to Shepherd Rehab Center in Atlanta. Here is dad Marty's Caringbridge journal entry from late Tuesday night:
"Ben, Sherri and me take the next step on this journey Wednesday as we travel to Atlanta and Ben is admitted to the Shepherd Center. Thanks to the Shepherd Center, the RICU at Rhode Island Hospital, BCBS of Alabama and AirMed of Birmingham for making this transfer happen so quickly.
It was so hectic yesterday I forgot to mention the uplifting visit by Chris Cole and his family Dana, Devon and Sara from Hoover. They made what would have been a long weekend very enjoyable. Devon got Ben to crack several big smiles and Chris, Dana and Sara relayed all the love coming from Hoover and the entire state of Alabama. Ben is so excited I hope he can get some sleep tonight. He asked to listen to some George Strait to relax. I hope the old troubadour will do the trick."
Your comments are welcomed. 🙏🙏🏿
