The Explorer Program is a career development program, which emphasizes academic study, character development, and self-discipline. Explorers also assist police and city personnel at functions where they may be called upon for a variety of tasks, such as distributing information, fingerprinting children, or traffic control, just to name a few. Each year, the Explorers contribute approximately 500 volunteer hours towards study and community service to the Police Department and the City of Hoover. We meet every Thursday night at the Hoover Police Operations Center from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Mission: In partnership with Boy Scouts of America, the Explorer Program provides young men and women the opportunity to study the field of law enforcement and community service first-hand.

Meet your Hoover K9s: Ace

Chief Derzis is proud to announce our latest addition to the Hoover PD family: Ace. Ace is a 1 year old Labrador Retriever who just celebrated his first birthday on August 2nd. He is 60 pounds and partners with School Resource Officer Kevin Hollis. His first official day on the job began last week with the start of school.

HPD was extremely fortunate to acquire Ace from the Central Alabama Police K-9 Association training center in Jemison. He was an outstanding recruit and we are thrilled to be his first Law Enforcement family! Ace is a drug detection dog and helps to take such narcotics as marihuana, cocaine, heroin, opiates and other illegal drugs off of our streets. He and Officer Hollis are assigned to the School Resource Division, with Spain Park High School being their “home base”.

About the Labrador Retriever: The Labrador Retriever breed of dogs has an amazing sense of smell. They have been taught to find and discover narcotics, money, explosives, bugs and accelerants (chemicals). Labs are ideal for law enforcement and military service dogs due to their intelligence, trainability and drive. They are less intimidating than other breeds and have an extremely good work ethic. They are even-tempered and well-behaved around young children and the elderly.

Interestingly enough, Officer Hollis is also the handler for HPD’s “world famous” K9 Ava ( Ava Hollis). Ava is well-known and beloved throughout the Hoover community for her work in the HOOVER CITY SCHOOLS and on the City of Hoover streets. Here’s a really cool fun fact: Ace and Ava share the same bloodlines. They have the same canine dad, making them half-brother and sister!

Officer Hollis shared, “Ace works like a champ and always gives 100%. He will not stop searching until he finds what he’s looking for. He always keeps his nose down and hunts. And he’s not as verbal as a lot of other drug dogs, which is great."

At home, there’s never a dull moment with a puppy in the house. “Ace will play until he is worn out, then he’s ready to go again after a few minutes. He’s a cool dude and loves attention. He also wants to make his handler happy, which is a wonderful trait to have.” Officer Hollis has been in Law Enforcement for 14 years, and a K9 handler for ten of those.

Ava has been such a tremendous asset to the City, and we have no doubt that Ace will follow in his big sister’s footsteps. Thank you Officer Hollis and Ace for what you do each and every day to make Hoover and Hoover City Schools safer!

Our day began with "The Rally" and then came some playtime in the rec center and then it was all business (well not really but we dressed the part) for the closing ceremonies. We didn't bring home any hardware but the explorers did great! We had very positive debriefs from the judges and really thought we could have won in several categories! With 90+teams competing in each one it's a tough fight at the top. Proud of each and every one of the explorers that represented the City of Hoover. Sad to see Hannah and Iman compete in their last nationals. They have been wonderful to have around the last 5 or 6 years!!

After all that, they talked us into another outing with a few other Alabama/Georgia teams!! We are exhausted but having a blast.
