Hope Township has its own little patch of milkweed in the little garden right on High Street up from the Museum.

Do you grow native milkweed? If you have even a small sunny spot, you should. Easy-to-grow species include common milkweed (mauve flowers), orange butterfly milkweed (orange flowers), and swamp milkweed (pink flowers).

Most people know that monarch butterfly caterpillars can eat only milkweed plants, but in addition there’s an entire suite of insects that depend on this one group of plants.

Ecologist say, “if you plant it, they will come,” and that’s certainly true when you invite native plants such as milkweed into your garden.
