Summer Reading registration is now underway and we’re excited to kick off the program on Monday, June 22, with a baby petting zoo from Animal Craze! This year’s Summer Reading Program features exciting grand prizes for children, teens, and adults, as well as an online auction hosted by the Friends of the Hopedale Library the week of August 10. It’s Summer Reading Time again at Bancroft Memorial Library! Join us for a summer filled with reading, prizes and fun for all ages. Registration begins June 1st, and the Summer Reading Kickoff Event featuring a baby animal petting zoo takes place on June 22nd! Stop by the Library to sign up, earn raffle tickets for exciting grand prizes, and make reading part of your summer adventure.

Today, we were honored to welcome Allyson A. Shippee-Whitmer, a descendant of Joseph Bancroft, and her family. We shared historical artifacts and invited them to sign the Library’s 1899 Visitor Ledger — whose very first signature is Joseph Bancroft himself.

Bancroft Memorial Library is so much more than books! Sure we offer books, movies, museum passes, hotspots - but we are also the caretakers of Hopedale’s history. Within our archives are historic documents, photographs, and letters that help tell the story of Hopedale. Among our treasured pieces are the original letter from Joseph Bancroft selling the Library to the Town for just $1.00, a diary of Joseph and Sylvia Bancroft written by their daughter Lilla, and a letter from William Draper donating $500 for the purchase of “technical books.”

Libraries preserve more than information - they preserve the stories, history, and heart of a community. ❤️

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:

Congratulations to Bancroft Memorial Library’s Youth Services Librarian Laura Brillant-Giangrande, who received the Celebrate Literacy Award from the Nobscot Reading Council for her exceptional dedication in supporting literacy in the lives of Hopedale’s children and families. The award celebration featured a presentation from David A. Kelly, author of the Ballpark and Football Mysteries series.

Since joining the library in 2023, Laura Brillant-Giangrande has expanded youth programming and outreach, helping drive a 42% increase in circulation in the Children’s Room and strengthening the library’s role as an important community resource.

A wise man once said that “there can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children,” and this rings particularly true, especially in divided times. Reading provides children with a tool to grow their imaginations, foster hope in otherwise difficult situations, and lay a crucial foundation from which their full potential can be realized.

Libraries remain crucial institutions in our communities, and it’s individuals like Laura who change lives for the better. Congratulations, Laura, and thank you for all that you do for our children!
