TIPS TO BE MORE AWARE WHEN DRIVING

When driving through an interstate your primary focus should be eliminating distractions and maintaining a safe buffer around your vehicle. If you happen to come up on an area with construction, always reduce your speed and drive with extra caution, as conditions can change quickly.

Speed and Lane Control
• Obey all temporary speed limits.
• Expect sudden slowdowns or stopped traffic. Traffic conditions can change without warning.
• Merge as early as possible. Do not wait until the last moment to move into the open lane.
• Avoid unnecessary lane changes.
• If in a work zone, watch for uneven pavement, lane shifts, and other changes to the roadway surface.

Distraction Management
• Put away mobile devices. Reading or sending texts, talking on the phone, or looking at your device greatly increases the risk of a crash.
• Avoid eating while driving as it takes your attention away from the road.
• Adjust dashboard controls before entering the highway. Set your climate controls, navigation, and radio in advance.
• Keep both hands on the steering wheel and your full attention on driving.

Distance and Awareness
• Double your normal following distance. Rear-end collisions are among the most common crashes.
• Give large commercial trucks extra space. Fully loaded tractor-trailers may require up to two football fields to come to a complete stop.
• Watch for brake lights well ahead of you. Scan several vehicles ahead to anticipate slowing or stopped traffic and react smoothly.

We're going to be blunt: It's miserable outside.

Knowing the signs between heat exhaustion and heat stroke can mean the difference between life and death.

Heat stroke is a time sensitive emergency. If someone becomes confused or has seizures, they are showing signs of heat stroke and need immediate care. Call 9-1-1, and attempt to cool them if possible.
