February 23rd is recognized as World Peace and Understanding Day.
Christchurch is home to Aotearoa/New Zealand’s only World Peace Bell — one of just around 20 such bells around the world. It was gifted to the city by the World Peace Bell Association in Tokyo and unveiled in 2006 in the tranquil setting of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
Made from coins and medals donated by 103 countries, the bell is a powerful symbol of global unity and hope. It stands in a pavilion surrounded by engraved pavers of the word “peace” in many languages, welcoming everyone — regardless of background — to reflect, remember, and recommit to peace.
