Our Grays Harbor Democratic family has lost a dear friend, mentor, and true public servant with the passing of Mike Cooper.
Mike spent his life showing up for others — as a firefighter, a lifelong champion for working people and organized labor, a State Representative, a former mayor, and a longtime supporter of local wrestling. But those titles only tell part of the story. Mike believed deeply in Democratic values, in the dignity of work, and in the power of ordinary people coming together. And he loved a campaign — the signs, the strategy, the candidates, the election-night numbers. Politics wasn't something he watched; it was something he lived, because he believed good people could make a difference.
As Chair of the Grays Harbor Democrats, I'm mourning not just a colleague, but a friend. I had the privilege of serving alongside Mike on Elma City Council and learning from him over the years. He always had time to share his advice, his perspective, or just talk politics over coffee — conversations that could easily stretch on for hours. I'm grateful for the conversations, for what he taught me, and for the friendship we built.
We will miss his stories, his advice, and his face at our meetings. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and union brothers and sisters.
Rest in peace, Mike. Your work mattered. Your friendship mattered. Your example will stay with us.
