City of Hornell 2026 Pool and Playground Plans

Get ready to dive into another great season as the City of Hornell and the Hornell YMCA team up to kick off summer at the Veterans Memorial Park pool on June 29. The Common Council officially approved the continuation of this successful partnership at their March meeting, marking its sixth consecutive year of providing summer recreation to the community.

“Summer is an exciting time in the City of Hornell, and we’re looking forward to welcoming residents back to our parks,” said Mayor John Buckley. “From the pool and splash pad to our playgrounds and sports courts, there are plenty of opportunities for people of all ages to get outside, stay active, and enjoy the season. We appreciate our continued partnership with the YMCA and look forward to another safe and successful summer in Hornell.”

Aquatics Director Amanda Gillette shared her excitement: "We are really excited to partner with the City to operate the pool at James Street Park again this summer. This partnership allows the YMCA to bring our dedication to healthy living to the community while providing a safe, fun, and welcoming place for families to enjoy the water. We look forward to another great summer and to serving our community through this collaboration."

The pool will be open daily from 12:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. beginning June 29 through August 21. Admission is just $1 for City residents, $2 for non-residents, and free for YMCA members. Individuals or businesses interested in sponsoring a “Free Swim Day” may reach out to the YMCA for more details. Sponsorship costs $100 with many prime summer dates available at this time.

The City’s summer playground program kicks off June 29 and runs through late August offering games and activities Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Playground locations include Veterans Memorial Park, Stephens Avenue Apartments, Maple City Park (High School), the Columbian School, and the Bryant Apartments.

From swimming and playground activities to pickleball, basketball, and tennis, there are plenty of ways for residents to enjoy the summer season. We’re looking forward to a safe, fun, and active summer in the City of Hornell!

National Police Week 2026

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls is National Police Week.

National Police Week is both a time of solemn remembrance and a celebration of men and women who serve with integrity, courage and bravery every day. A career in law enforcement comes with long hours, sacrifice, and challenges that many people never see. It is a life that these men and women willingly choose for the sake of the greater good.

Behind every badge is a story - a story of service, sacrifice, and family. During this week, we honor the officers who continue to protect and serve our communities, while also remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.
