Good day All,hope you are safe and warm!
Uncle Kenny was telling how he joined the service. He turned 18 the same day his Uncle Ralph died at the railroad yard. Said he just got home from his shift at Thatcher Glass, just was nicely dozing off when Grandma yelled up the stairs " Something happened at the train yard he better get over there! Terrible day and on his birthday too.said he ran all the way!!
Okay so two weeks later he said he decided to enlist in the Navy! Said it was a bright sunny day walked in the recruiter asked what and why he was there for,Dad replied " heard you could use some good men I'm here to enlist"!
Recruiter said "yes we are can you read the eye chart there on the wall?? Dad replied "What Chart? Where is it??!"
well recruiter said if he wanted to go to Utica and do some eye exercises for 6-8 weeks he might still get into the Navy.
Dad asked if they were going to pay for it? And of course not so dad said they could forget it!!! Dad also said he was sun blind walking into the office from outside.
Think it was two weeks later he got his draft notice, told to report to Syracuse and this time passed the eye test!! Navy said they would take him!! Dad said no you didn't want me when I came in your door not going to get me now!!
he was part of the 82nd Airborne quartermaster corp.
I asked him Why the Navy, thought maybe he had love for the sea?? Nope because his Brothers were all in Army, Marines he wanted to be different! Lol!
