National Read a Book Day is observed annually on September 6th. On August 9th, we all celebrated National Book Lovers Day. While these bookish days may seem similar, National Read a Book Day invites us ALL to grab a book we might enjoy and spend the day reading.


Reading improves memory and concentration as well as reduces stress. Older adults who spend time reading show a slower cognitive decline and tend to participate in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetime. Books are an inexpensive entertainment, educational tool and time machine too!

The City of Horseshoe Bay maintains a Recycling and Brush Disposal Center within the city limits for residents of Horseshoe Bay. In 2025, Horseshoe Bay adopted a new single-stream system, meaning residents can now combine mixed paper items (newspaper, junk mail, cereal boxes, cardboard) and containers (aluminum and steel cans, glass jars and bottles, plastic bottles) into a single bin or bag without sorting them first. A quick reminder: ONLY RESIDENTS of Horseshoe Bay may use the facility. Recycle Monitors will be on staff to verify that those using the site are residents. National Hummingbird Day happens during the first Saturday in September on the National Day Calendar. We are sharing our curiosity about the beautiful and tiny little bird known as the hummingbird. We want everyone to spread their wings today and learn facts, history, and folklore on National Hummingbird Day.


Hummingbirds are remarkable birds with unique characteristics that fascinate bird watchers and nature lovers, alike. There are over 300 species of hummingbirds throughout the world that belong to the Trochilidae family. The Trochilidae family is known for their small size, beautiful plumage, and amazing flying abilities. This family of birds comes in different sizes, colors, and behaviors that are specific to the location where hummingbirds live.

The average hummingbird is between 2 to 5 inches in length, making it the smallest bird in the world. Known for their beautiful colors, hummingbird feathers are an iridescent mix of greens, blues, reds, and purples. Interestingly, the iridescent color of hummingbird feathers gives the appearance of the feathers changing colors in light.

A hummingbird flaps its wings up to 50 times per second and has amazing flying capabilities. For example, hummingbirds move their wings in a figure-eight pattern, allowing them to "hover" in mid air. In addition, these unique flying characteristics allow a hummingbird to feed on a flower while in flight. Unsurprisingly, because hummingbirds move so quickly, they feed frequently on nectar from flowers and insects.

Did You Know? Hummingbirds are a migratory species that travel long distances. For example, the Rufous Hummingbird migrates about 4,000 miles each winter from North America to central Mexico.

National Wildlife Day on September 4th encourages improved awareness of the species around us and in the broader world.


This National Day focuses on endangered species, preservation, and conservation efforts around the world. Zoos, aviaries and marine sanctuaries provide a variety of ways to get involved.

No matter where you live, opportunities abound to learn and participate in the day. Wildlife doesn't only exist in the forest or outside the city limits. Look closely. The creatures and animals sharing our world live under our feet and in the sky above us. Our rivers, lakes and oceans are teeming with wildlife of all sizes. It's essential to understand how we impact the habitats that animals need to survive. Their homes supply their food and shelter.

Since wildlife relies on a stable habitat, understanding conservation and preservation is important. Developing strategies helps to maintain existing habitats and repair or replace those that have been destroyed. These strategies are especially important when a decline in a species is detected. For example, each year in August, International Whale Shark Day brings attention to the plight of the world's largest fish. Despite efforts, the gentle giant continues to decline in numbers.

Around the world, facilities and organizations will present seminars and educational programs. Additionally, podcasts and documentaries alert us to the changing conditions for various species around the world. Some may be as close as your own backyard. From the sky to the depths of the ocean, wildlife surrounds us!

Save the Date! October 6, 2026 at 6 p.m. at the Quail Point Lodge parking lot!

Join the Horseshoe Bay Police Department and Fire Department for the city's inaugural National Night Out! National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, build stronger police-community partnerships, and foster neighborhood camaraderie. Neighbors are encouraged to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors, and spend the evening outside! The Police and Fire Departments will host a community-wide event in the Quail Point Lodge parking lot, featuring free hot dogs and games for the kiddos. Please stop by and say hello and enjoy the evening with police officers, firefighters, city officials, and neighbors!

Hi Circle West is now open! As residents may recall, a sinkhole that formed under the road required extensive repair work not only to the road, but also the galvanized drainage pipe underneath it. Two 36-inch corrugated metal pipes were replaced with three 48-inch concrete box culverts, and existing utilities that had to be relocated were upgraded. While this project was more involved than originally anticipated, the integrity of the new infrastructure meets the highest safety and reliability standards. While some finishing work is still required to fully complete the project, the road will remain open for the remainder of the project and is not expected to close again! Residents are now free to drive on Hi Circle West. (We've included some photos of the work as it was in progress and will add more of the completed road soon!)
