A lot is going on in the floodplain portion of Garland County. Housing starts in the County are on the rise and a large portion of the development is near the water. People like the calm soothing sounds of the streams as the water rolls over our abundant outcroppings of rock in the stream bed. That calm, soothing sound can turn to loud raging torrent in a very short time given the right conditions. Heavy rainfall in a short time can turn the smallest stream into a raging torrent of water an place lives, and property in danger. Even with the great control of lake levels through flood control measures, high water levels on the lakes can become a danger very quickly.
Know where you are building, and be sure you are not planning on building in a Special Flood Hazard Area as designated by FEMA. Contact the office of the floodplain administrator with any questions you have regarding building in or around a flood hazard area. The phone number is 501-767-3911 or come by the office at 401 Mid America Blvd, Hot Springs.
