Edward “Ed, Eddy Shack” Sever, proud U.S. Army veteran and longtime firefighter with the Calumet Township Fire Department, passed away peacefully at his home on July 22, 2025.
Ed was a devout member of our department for 34 years where he lead the department through many fires, took ownership of “His Truck” our Aerial, and assisted in countless rescues at the Houghton Douglas Falls, Brockway Mountain, and the Quincy Mine. Ed was awarded Firefighter of the year in 2009.
Through sickness and in health, Ed was always a face at the fire department. While going through his treatments, if the tones went off, you could count on seeing Ed at the scene, just “stopping by to check on the boys.” He also never missed a beat when it came to travelling to the UP Tournaments. We always had to keep an eye on him, if you left him even for a second, we would find him later coming up the road doing the Eddie Shuffle after taking a few swishes of Hartley’s to ensure he got the full flavor.
His memory and dedication will live on at the fire hall. Rest easy Ed, we will continue to answer the call and know that you will always be watching over us. Keep the coffee hot for us, we will take it from here.
