League of Women Voters of the Copper Country

League of Women Voters of the Copper Country Serving the people of Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, and Ontonagon counties in Michigan. It influences public policy through education and advocacy.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization encouraging informed and active participation in government. We never support or oppose any political party or candidate. The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles.

1) Voters Service/Citizen Education: we present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues.

2) Action/Advoc

acy: we are also nonpartisan, but, after study, we use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest. To conduct our voter service and citizen education activities, we use funds from the League of Women Voters Education Fund, which is a 501(c)(3) corporation, a nonprofit educational organization. The League of Women Voters, a membership organization, conducts action and advocacy and is a nonprofit 501(c)(4) corporation.

We support the 2026 Jail Project - the LWVCC has had a position on the need for a new jail in Houghton County since April 2007. We did not take a position on the 2018 millage ballot - we had concerns and could not reach consensus. We were in favor of the 2025 millage, but unfortunately it did not pass (44%-56%). We are in favor of the 2026 millage, which is accompanied by a plain language resolution that specifies what the build will be (and what it will not be). Also, this ballot question was the result of an open process which was well covered in the local media and which received a great deal of voter input. The LWVCC urges the voters of Houghton County to look into the 2026 Jail Project and to vote yes so that Houghton County can have a jail that is intrinsically safe for staff, inmates, and visitors and one that catches up with the regulations issued by the Michigan Department of Corrections. For more on the jail project, listen to the August 30, 2026 Copper Country Today, which featured one of our co-Presidents who also co-chairs the Jail Committee.
