It has been a busy week. Treat Street last Saturday and this week we have been talking about fire safety at the elementary school.

You may have seen us today spraying water in the portage. This was our monthly training. Keeping skills sharp and training newer firefighters how to use all the equipment. We were taking water from the portage to spray it back into portage, important skills to have when there is no hydrants to supply water. Last week the department took part in the UP Fire Tournament. There was a parade on Friday and then five events that require various firefighting skills to complete.

A few things happen this week at the department. Monday we supported Huron towns efforts at a fire. We started weekly works out in full turn out gear to help us stay fit and get use to working in gear. The first fire department in Houghton was established December 12, 1861, creating the Continental Fire Co. No. 1. Today, the department serves the City of Houghton and Michigan Tech University.

Due to unsafe ice conditions on the Portage Canal and Portage Lake, local law enforcement and local first responder agencies are requesting that everyone including snowmobiles stay off of the ice at this time.

Just a reminder the 68th annual CCVFA Tournament is taking place this weekend rain or shine. Firefighter races start at noon at kestner park, followed by the parade that is taking place in downtown Houghton on Sheldon ave at 7pm with music and dancing to follow at 8pm at the Historic Dee stadium! Outlaw’d will be providing the music and admission is free! Beer and wine will be available for purchase! Hope to see you all there!
