National Crime Victim’s Rights Week
April 19th, 2026 – April 25th, 2026
Since 1981, National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is celebrated every year in April. This week is dedicated to recognizing the impact of crime on individuals, families, and communities and honor the dedication of those before us that established victim rights so that all victims have the rights and services they need to recover from crime.
The 2026 National Crime Victim’s Rights Week theme is LISTEN. ACT. ADVOCATE.
This theme serves as a powerful reminder that supporting victims takes more than awareness; it also takes action. Listening means creating safe, judgement-free spaces where survivors are heard and believed. Action means connecting victims to resources, providing compassionate, trauma-informed support, and removing barriers to service. Advocacy means standing up for victim’s rights and ensuring their voices are represented.
When we protect and support victims, we strengthen entire communities. Safety, justice, and healing are not individual concerns; they are collective responsibilities. By listening, acting, and advocating, we create communities where survivors are supported, rights are honored, and prevention becomes possible.
This National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, let us all commit ourselves to ensuring every victim is heard, every voice matters, and every community stands together in support of healing and justice for all.
If you or someone you know in our community may be in need of support after victimization, please do not hesitate to contact our Nottoway County Victim/Witness Program Director, Lauren Meekins.

On January 30, 2026, A Nottoway County jury found Candice Love guilty of one count of animal cruelty. On February 6, 2026 Judge Lupold sentenced Love to 12 months incarceration, with 4 months suspended, and imposed a five-year prohibition on possessing domestic animals – the maximum allowable under Virginia law for this offense.

On January 17, 2025 a citizen reported a deceased dog on Love’s property. Nottoway County animal control officers responded, examined the conditions of the property, spoke with Love, and collected the dog’s remains for examination. The subsequent examination determined that, although the dog had food in its stomach at the time of death, it suffered from severe malnutrition and dehydration. The exam results were consistent with severe and chronic emaciation, which an expert testified was consistent with a prolonged period of starvation. During the investigation and at trial, Love stated that she had picked up the dog earlier that month due to concerns about its condition. However, she did not seek veterinary treatment and instead kept the dog tethered outdoors without adequate shelter during cold January temperatures.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office expresses its appreciation to the Nottoway County animal control officers for their thorough work and attention throughout this case. As a reminder, under Virginia law, dogs may not be tethered outside when the temperature is 32 °F or lower or 85 °F or higher.
