Cape May Court House, New Jersey - Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland together with Sheriff Robert Nolan are alerting residents to a recent telephone scam in which individuals are receiving calls from persons falsely claiming to be members of the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office.

In these calls, the scammers tell victims that they owe money for fines or missed court appearances and threaten that a warrant will be issued for their arrest if payment is not made immediately. The callers often demand payment through unconventional methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or other non-traditional means.

The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office and all law enforcement agencies do not contact individuals by phone to demand payment or threaten arrest in exchange for immediate payment. Law enforcement agencies will never request payment via gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or similar methods. Residents are advised to hang up immediately if they receive such a call and do not provide personal or financial information.

If you believe you have been the victim of this scam, please contact the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135.

The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office urges all residents to remain vigilant and share this information with family members, particularly elderly relatives who are often targeted by these types of scams.

⚠️ SCAM ALERT ⚠️ PLEASE SHARE ⚠️

We’ve had these instances before, however, the criminals have become more aggressive in their tactics.

We have received several reports of a telephone scam involving subjects who call victims and state they have a warrant or other outstanding business with our agency and need to make payments to avoid arrest.

These individuals have gone as far as using our own officers actual names as well as setting up voicemail accounts which also impersonate actual officers from our agency.

The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office WILL NEVER contact you by telephone requesting payment for warrants or otherwise. Please be aware of this and similar incidents. If you’re ever unsure if any call claiming to be from our agency is legitimate, hang up and call us directly. Also, please share this with the elderly or loved ones who may not be on social media.
