“Pre-hospital emergency care in the modern age is often described as a “hierarchy” of human and physical resources utilized in the acute setting to provide the best possible care until definitive care can be established”

The Federal EMS Systems Act of 1973 provided funding for the creation of more than 300 EMS systems across the nation, as well as set aside funding for key future planning and gro

wth. In 1972, the University of Cincinnati established itself with the first Emergency Medicine program. By 1975, there were 32 Emergency Medicine Residencies across the nation preparing physicians that would interface with EMS at all levels from responders to educators. In 1976, several community leaders decided to form an Emergency Medical Service in Fayette County. Until this formation, prehospital care was provided by local funeral directors. Local funeral directors and community leaders were instrumental in the formation of the Fayette County Life Squad. Since 1976, there have been hundreds of selfless, civic-minded, dedicated volunteers and professional EMS Providers that have given themselves to protect our community. 🎉 Fayette County EMS — 50 Years Strong! 🚑🕰️

Throwing it back to an archived article that shows what community support looks like: Ralph Vance and Darrell Tissotof Fayette Carpet Outlet (210 E. Market St.) stepped up to donate replacement flooring for Fayette County Life Squad Vehicle No. 1, a 1978 Dodge — keeping our volunteer squad rolling for years to come.

Big thanks to R. Todd Monroe, Life Squad Coordinator, for coordinating and preserving this important piece of our history. 🙌🧰❤️

This is what 50 years of service is built on — neighbors helping neighbors, small businesses pitching in, and volunteers who answer the call. 📣

If you remember this era, rode in that rig, or know someone who served, drop a memory below, tag them, and let’s celebrate together! 📸👇

🎉 Fayette County EMS — 50 Years Strong! 🚑🚁

Throwing it back to June 10, 1981 — an archived Record‑Herald piece that spotlights our Fayette County Life Squad members who traveled to Akron for a Military Assistance for Safety and Traffic (MAST) helicopter operations review.

Dave Burchett, Kathy Monroe, and R. Todd Monroe represented our team in advanced training sessions — and R. Todd Monroe even served on the faculty, teaching emergency care for non‑breathing patients.

The article also notes a proclamation from Governor James A. Rhodes declaring “Emergency Medical Services and Rescue Week” to honor those who give countless hours to help the sick and injured. 👏📜

Let’s celebrate these early leaders and the skills they brought home — their dedication helped shape the lifesaving service we rely on today.

🚑 Throwback to 1979 — As we gear up to celebrate Fayette County EMS’ 50th Anniversary in 2026, here’s a heartwarming look at two archived articles (Jan 25, 1979) that show how community spirit built the Life Squad we know today. 🙌

Highlights:
Miller Equipment Co. and Robert Young donated a 40‑channel CB radio, giving the New Holland unit vital communications with the county, police, and the hospital — a game changer for patient care. 📻✨

The New Holland Lions Club pitched in $100 toward a “Stokes” stretcher, helping crews safely reach and transport patients from hard‑to‑access places. 🛟
Village officials funded a reflectorized sign, and local businessmen and farmers helped provide housing for a new ambulance and a meeting place as the unit grew from six members to a larger team. 🚨🏠

From the second article: the Y‑Gradale Sorority (Washington C.H.) raised funds for yellow fog lights to improve safety on rural roads, and Mrs. Cheryl Huffman presented money for four child blood pressure cuffs — handed to coordinator Mary L. Lines to improve pediatric care. 🔦🩺

Unit leader John Rowland and president R. Todd Monroe are quoted as celebrating these community partnerships that strengthened emergency response across Fayette County. 📣❤️

This is a beautiful reminder that our EMS was built by neighbors helping neighbors — volunteers, local businesses, service clubs, and everyday citizens all pitching in. Share this piece of local history and tag someone who remembers these early days! 🕰️📚

🎉 Fayette County EMS — 50 Years Strong! 🚑❤️

Found this gem in the archives and had to share — a spotlight on the Fayette County Life Squad’s dedication, teamwork, and quiet heroism.

The article highlights how unpaid, highly trained volunteers answered calls, coordinated with hospitals, and kept our community safe night after night. Special shout-outs to Todd Monroe (Life Squad Vice President and author of the piece), Jane Williams (dispatcher), Geneva Hutchinson (crew leader), and crew members Harris and Overla for their service and steady hands.

“CAUTION EXERCISED — Crew leader Geneva Hutchinson checks for traffic in the intersection before proceeding.” 🚦

These volunteers weren’t just responders — they were neighbors who trained hard, practiced safe driving, and put patients first. Their teamwork and commitment built the foundation of the Fayette County EMS we celebrate today. 👏👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

Help us honor them — like, share, and tag anyone who remembers these early Life Squad heroes or who’s served our community.

Let’s make sure their story gets the recognition it deserves as we head into the 50th Anniversary in 2026! 🕰️🎊
