Last week, with a 3-2 vote, the Board of Supervisors voted not to match the local required minimum funding ($168K) to receive Virginia state funds ($423K) for the Amelia County Public Schools. If they don't change their decision by the 31, then the pre-k program will be cut, funding for special needs will be cut, and public school staff will lose out on an additional 2% raise.
In addition, this is a fiscally irresponsible decision because our current budget is projected to have a surplus this year. We could absorb the minimum required local match. It also means that $423K of our Virginia tax money will NOT come back to Amelia schools.
Please reach out to the Board of Supervisors via email and CC the County Administrator or call them to encourage them to change their minds. (If your representative voted in favor, thank them for voting yes). Scripts below.
