Happy National Hispanic Heritage Month! I am so glad to see this group of people being recognized but I am especially happy to see my friend Raul Orlando Edwards and activist César Espinoza of Fiel Houston.
Raul is a good friend who is not only the best Salsa instructor but he is an amazing cook.
César is the loudest voice for Latinx advocacy.
Our city is that much better with the contributions of such amazing people!

My proposal for Apartment Inspection Reform (AIR) came after seeing so many tenants living in conditions that were simply inhabitable.
My policy is based on sound research ( see https://bit.ly/AIRefom ), and is sustainable. Living in such conditions impacts one's physical and mental health which leads to many other issues.
In a country like the U.S. and a city like Houston, there is no reason for anyone to be living in these conditions.

In June's budget meeting, I proposed Apartment Inspection Reform (AIR). While I was knocking on doors for the CDC moratorium on evictions to let tenants know about their rights, I saw their apartments. I was shocked at the poor living conditions. Some of these apartments were rat-infested and had mold issues. No one should live like that.
My proposal is being presented at the Housing Committee on 9/21/21. My team and I have worked hard for this. Stay tuned. More information coming soon.

Thank you to all our workers who make Houston great and thank you to all our Labor Unions without whom many people would not have this day off to enjoy with their loved ones.

This day is important because over a 100 years ago, the work day was over 12 hours long, and most people worked 7 days a week. How did we get to a 40 hour work week with fair pay ( in most cases)?

Today my Deputy Chief and I, along with our sons and a friend, spent the morning volunteering at the Houston Food Bank. We were part of a group of volunteers sorting out items for the disaster boxes that were going to people impacted by #hurricaneida.
I was proud to see so many young students volunteering this morning, especially since it’s a long weekend.
A special shout out to
Luis Ponce from CyFalls HS
Rayyan Bangee from Cy-Springs High School
Harrison Plummer Episcopal High School
The whole team of West Lake Ducks and their leadership team.
And all the other people who volunteered.

Volunteer numbers are down at the Food Bank. Please encourage, students and clubs at schools to volunteer and if any of you have time during the week or weekends, please consider signing up for a shift.

Today is #NationalFoodBankDay. On top of food insecurity, many of people in our neighboring state of Louisiana are reeling from #HurricaneIda. Many have been without power and will be without power for days. The Houston Food Bank is sending disaster boxes to Louisiana but they need supplies. There are some items that are urgently needed. There are couple of locations to drop off donations, starting next Tuesday. If you prefer to make a financial donation, you can do so here:

Every dollar counts. No donation is too small!

It’s good to see Houstonians stepping up for the people of Louisiana. We have a history with our neighboring state which stepped in to help us during Hurricane Harvey.

There’s many ways Houstonians can help.
You can donate items or make financial donations to organizations that are working in Louisiana or you can volunteer your time to collect/pack items for these organizations.

The people of Fifth Ward/Kashmere Gardens need solutions for the Cancer Clusters identified among the residents who live in the vicinity of the Union Pacific Railroad Site. Yesterday, I submitted my statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in response to UPRR’s application for permit renewal. There’s an opportunity to right some wrongs here and I will stand with the people and advocate on their behalf at every opportunity.

Read my statement below.

Today I dropped off supplies and met with organizations helping with the Haiti Disaster Relief.
At the location I met with Houston Haitians United who is leading the effort as well as Ismaili CIVIC who has been tremendous in helping with this effort.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the leadership of Mayor Sylvester Turner and his team who mobilized and worked with the organizations to pull this effort together.

One thing I know about the people of Houston is that we are known for our big ❤️. Whether it is taking care of people in our city, another state, or another country, we ALWAYS step up.

🔴Donations are still being accepted until next Saturday and there is an overnight box available too.

If you prefer to make a financial donation, please visit: https://linktr.ee/hhunited1804

In addition, tonight please keep the people of Louisiana in your thoughts. Hurricane Ida is expected to make landfall on Sunday.

Today Lloyd and Jean from the amazing grassroots organization, LAMP Services came to visit me at my Council office. We discussed the current work they’re doing in Houston and the populations they’re serving. They picked up some supply filled back-to-school backpacks for a particular school in an underserved community they are working with. I’m so grateful for their advocacy and passion.

Councilmember Plummer, I voted for you in 2019. I am very greatful you have consistently been an independent voice on council and appreciate all your advocacy around I-45, as I live in District H. I hope you support labor and democracy today by scheduling the vote on strengthening City Council for 2021 and not delaying it until 2023. (I called your office this morning and shared this message with your staff).
How about holding the Director of BARC responsible for the mess he's made of the shelter?
Your office does great work. Thank you.
The Brazoria County NAACP is honored to have Councilwoman Dr. Letitia Plummer as one of our distinquished panel of guest for this Historical Event. This is going to be Epic. Thank you Dr. Plummer!
Updates:
BOIL WATER NOTICE IN EFFECT IN HOUSTON
ALERT: Important update Please turn down your thermostat. Power outages are not under the control of the City of Houston. Anyone who has lost power needs to layer up with clothing and blankets. GRB is at capacity now. Critical care and special needs residents are priority and those people can call 311 for assistance. We are all in this together. Please share this vital information from Mayor Sylvester Turner.
We’re receiving many enquiries about power outages. Please be patient. Here’s the latest from Center Point “Unfortunately, if you are a customer who is currently experiencing an outage, you should be prepared to be without power for at least the rest of the day.” If you have absolutely no heat at home and need to know about warming centers, please call 311 for more information. Please do NOT call 911 unless it's an emergency we don't want to overwhelm our emergency lines. Driving in this condition is hazardous. Please stay off the road. Be safe and stay warm. Council Member Letitia Plummer
Dear Council Member Plummer, I keep posting the comment below to the Houston City Council District G page, but it continues to be deleted. Just wanted someone on the Council to know that Greg Travis' comments about Michelle Obama are not appreciated.
Happy Hanukkah. Blessing each of you with Peace and Joy
