Last week, the Houston Police Department was proud to host the ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) Active Shooter Response Program in partnership with the Chickasaw County School District and the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Department. Officers from the City of Tupelo, the City of Plantersville, and Lee County Sheriff’s department joined together for this important training.
Participants completed both classroom exercises and realistic force-on-force scenarios using Simunition training weapons to enhance decision-making, communication, and response capabilities in high-stress situations. Training together helps ensure that agencies can work seamlessly to protect our schools and communities should a critical incident ever occur.
We would also like to thank the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Amory Police Department for providing instructors for this training. Their knowledge and professionalism were instrumental in making the week a success.
Strong partnerships and continuous training are essential to keeping our communities safe, and we appreciate everyone who played a role in making this opportunity possible.

I was certified as an instructor in 2008 in ALERRT and happy to report that this program is more important than ever with its updated training criteria.

PARENTS, TAKE NOTICE !

Beginning July 1, 2026, Mississippi's new Senate Bill 2710 significantly strengthens penalties for firearm-related crimes and increases accountability for offenders.

Key Provisions:

• Juveniles under 18 who commit a violent crime with a firearm will be charged in Circuit Court and prosecuted as adults, unless the court orders otherwise.

• Transferring or selling a stolen firearm now carries enhanced penalties. If that firearm is later used in a violent crime, offenders can face a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 40 years in prison.

• Willfully firing into a crowd or gathering of two or more people is now a felony punishable by:

A minimum of 5 and a maximum of 15 years in prison

Fines up to $10,000

Signed into law by the Governor
Effective July 1, 2026

As your Chief, I want every parent and guardian to understand the seriousness of this law. The days of treating armed violence as youthful misconduct are over. A teenager who chooses to pick up a gun and commit a violent crime may now face adult consequences that can follow them for the rest of their life.

Have the conversation now. Teach accountability. Teach responsibility. Make sure your children understand that one poor decision involving a firearm can cost them their freedom, their future, and career opportunities that can never be recovered.

It is far better to educate your children about the criminal justice system before they become a part of it. Parents are the first and most important teachers of right and wrong, and those lessons matter. Children should enjoy their youth without destroying their future!

A split-second decision can lead to decades behind bars. The most important conversation you have with your child today may determine whether they walk across a graduation stage today—or stand before a judge in a courtroom tomorrow.

A Statement of Appreciation for Our Officers

To the officers of the Houston Police Department, I want to personally thank and congratulate each of you for the outstanding work you continue to do for our community.

Over the past couple of months, our department has handled more felony investigations than we have during the last 3 years combined. Despite the increased workload and challenges, our officers have continued to serve with professionalism, dedication, and integrity.

This past weekend alone, our city hosted multiple events simultaneously, including the Farmers Market, a rodeo, movie night, activities at the splash pad, heavy traffic from local gatherings, and several events at the Civic Center. Throughout it all, our officers worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of residents and visitors while maintaining a positive and professional presence.

Law enforcement is not an easy profession. It is often a thankless job, and it is impossible to please everyone. Yet our officers continue to show up every day committed to serving this community to the best of their abilities.

I ask our community to keep all of our officers in your thoughts and prayers—our six full-time officers and six part-time officers. Like agencies across Mississippi and throughout the nation, we face ongoing staffing challenges and continue to work with limited personnel.

I am grateful for the support this community has consistently shown our department. Your encouragement means more than you know. Our officers are doing the best they can under demanding circumstances, and they deserve our respect and appreciation.

If you believe you have what it takes to serve this community, the Houston Police Department is accepting applications. We welcome individuals who are willing to answer the call to serve and make a difference.

Thank you to our officers and to the citizens who continue to support them.

Memorial Day Message

Today, as we gather with family and friends and enjoy the freedoms we often take for granted, I ask our community to pause and remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.

This day is not simply the beginning of summer. It is a sacred day of remembrance for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation. They made the ultimate sacrifice so that we could live in freedom, worship freely, raise our families, and enjoy the blessings we share every day in this great country.

Here in our small town, we understand the values of faith, family, service, and sacrifice. Many of our own families have loved ones who wore the uniform, and some carry the weight of losing a hero who never came home. Today, we honor their memory and the legacy they left behind.

I am humbled by the opportunity to serve alongside men and women who have also dedicated their lives to protecting others. We recognize that our ability to serve this community is possible because generations of American heroes stood in harm’s way before us.

Please join me in keeping the families of our fallen service members in your thoughts and prayers. May we never forget the price that was paid for the freedoms we enjoy, and may we strive to live lives worthy of their sacrifice.

From my family and the entire Police Department, thank you to all who have served, and especially to those who gave everything for our nation.

This morning, the Houston Police Department successfully completed its physical training assessment. As a department, we remain committed to promoting both physical fitness and mental well-being, recognizing that the demands of our profession require us to maintain a high level of readiness.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and congratulations to our staff for their outstanding performance. The test was challenging, yet our team demonstrated exceptional determination, resilience, and unity.

It was especially encouraging to see part-time personnel come out in support of their colleagues. Despite facing obstacles—including injuries and ongoing recovery from medical setbacks—many pushed through with remarkable perseverance and dedication.

Your commitment to excellence and to one another does not go unnoticed. Thank you for your hard work, your courage, and your service to our community.
