“If we are to have true justice, judges must be empowered to set a high bar to screen out junk science and protect the innocent.”

Read a powerful op-ed from Celeste Dixon, a current Kansas resident whose mother was murdered in Houston, Texas nearly 40 years ago. Her killer was sentenced to death and executed in 2007.

"His death did not heal my pain — I still miss my mother every day — and it did not feel like “justice.”"

I urge Gov. Laura Kelly to commute the death sentences of the nine men on Kansas’ death row to life without parole.

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court of the United States declined to consider the petition of Charles Don Flores, who has spent more than 25 years on death row in Texas for a crime he did not commit. His conviction was tainted by hypnotically influenced eyewitness testimony - testimony that is now prohibited by state law.

Flores asked the Justices to compel the Texas Court or Criminal Appeals to provide him with a meaningful opportunity to present the evidence of his innocence.

Charles Flores argued that his conviction was improperly based on testimony from a witness who changed her recollection after hypnosis by an investigator.
