Wear denim tomorrow to show solidarity and support survivors of sexual assault! Denim Day is a campaign on a Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students to make a social statement by wearing jeans on this day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual violence.

More on the history of the day below!
⚠️TW: SA⚠️

The Denim Day campaign began after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a r**e conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans at the time of the assault. The justices stated that the victim must have helped her attacker remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. In response to this case and the outpouring of support, Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence. There is never an excuse.

In an effort to recognize Earth Day, Refugee Services of Texas would like to acknowledge how the climate crisis impacts already displaced people and refugees, and also how climate disasters increasingly drive displacement of other vulnerable groups. As migration relates to slow-onset natural hazards, environmental degradation, and the long-term impacts of climate change, forced movement becomes even greater if we do not intervene and take preventive measures now. In the 2021 Groundswell Part II Report, the World Bank Group estimates that by 2050 there will be 216 million people internally displaced due to climate change (Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service). We hope for solutions to the refugee and climate crises so that a) we are prepared to support anyone who needs it and b) so people will not be forced to leave their homes in the future. This looks like advocacy, education, policy changes, supporting organizations whose mission aligns with these goals, and so much more.

Happy Pesach to you and yours from RST! Passover (Pesach) commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Passover begins at sundown and is observed by avoiding leavened grains, known as chametz, and retelling the story of Passover through a ceremonial meal called a Seder.

❗Office Closure❗: All RST offices will be closed today, 4/15, in observance of Easter weekend and Passover. We will reopen Monday (4/18) at 8:30AM. Thank you for your understanding!
