Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Irmo Fire District for their tragic loss of Firefighter James Muller.

Rest easy brother; we'll take it from here.

It is with great sadness that Chief Mike Sonefeld and the Officers and Members of the Irmo Fire District announce the death of an on-duty firefighter due to a structural collapse during fire suppression efforts yesterday afternoon.

Fire protection services from multiple fire departments were performing interior suppression activities when this tragedy occurred. Irmo was assigned to this call as an automatic aid response. More details of the fire will be forthcoming when appropriate.

Three members from the Irmo Fire District were transported to the hospital after the event, the other two firefighters have been released from the hospital.

Firefighter James Michael Muller, 25, has been a member of the Irmo Fire District for 7 years. He was a highly respected firefighter that had a love and passion for the job. Firefighter Muller will be greatly missed amongst his firefighting family.

Chief Sonefeld and the Fire District appreciate the outpouring of your thoughts and prayers during this tragic and difficult time.

Last night our members participated in a communications drill. Each member was put through a brief obstacle course with their vision obscured in order get their heart rate elevated and to create a sense of disorientation. At the completion of the course members would then use their portable radios to communicate with another member in an attempt to complete a Lego sculpture identical to the one being described to them. This was done in full gear in order to help firefighters tune their fine motor skills while in bulky and hot gear. As well as teaching them to adjust their heavy breathing in order to communicate clearly on the radio.

The fire service and the military have close bonds, with many former military joining the ranks of our fire department.

This month is National Military Appreciation Month, so we want to recognize the sacrifices made by these members and all military personnel.

Tonight, B-shift trained on High Rise tactics. What is a high-rise? Typically a building 4 stories and higher equipped with elevators and stair wells. Firefighting tactics in these type of structures are very different than in a typical house fire. Frequent training helps keep us in a state of readiness for any situation we may face.

Today Ladder 2 crew was out for lunch at a local eatery known to be pet friendly. We were asked by a member of the public to take a picture with their Husky (Koda) to send to her son; a Firefighter for The City of Palestine, TX. It was an awesome opportunity to extend the love of the fire family.

Engineers at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston will be conducting a pressure test on Saturday, July 9, that will result in a sudden burst of noise from 11 a.m. to noon CDT. The test will cause a loud boom that may sound like an explosion to people in the vicinity.
People nearby and in surrounding neighborhoods and communities likely will hear the test, which will be conducted at the Energy Systems Test Activity area, and only if weather conditions permit. The center’s gate on Space City Boulevard, near Bay Area Boulevard, will be closed, as will two pedestrian gates and two vehicle gates at the Gilruth Center entrance.
The test will begin at 8 a.m., with the culminating boom likely to come between 11 a.m. and noon. It is being conducted by the center’s Engineering Directorate to determine the maximum pressure at which an inflatable lunar habitat module prototype will burst (or fail). Burst testing is an invaluable tool for engineers in material selection, component geometry, and other design elements. Since the future habitat being tested eventually may find its way to the Moon’s surface and need to function in that extreme environment, it is critical to understand how much internal pressure it can withstand.
“The noise may be alarming for folks but, rest assured, it is a normal outcome of the test we are doing,” said Matthew Green, senior software engineer and director of this test. “The more people who are aware the test is taking place, the more people we can make feel comfortable and bring awareness to the important research we are doing.”
The test is expected to take up to four hours, but the burst of noise is expected to be brief. The test will conclude by the end of the day Saturday.
