Happy Juneteenth, Midtown. ❤️🖤💚
Juneteenth marks the day word of freedom finally reached the last enslaved people in Texas when General Order No. 3 was read aloud in Galveston on June 19, 1865.
Juneteenth is a time to honor freedom, reflect on the work still ahead, and uplift the people and places that shaped Houston’s story. Midtown’s roots are deeply connected to Houston’s Freedmen’s Town and the historic Third Ward and Fourth Ward, communities that have played a pivotal role in what is known today as Midtown Houston.
Shortly after emancipation, hundreds of formerly enslaved people migrated to the swampy banks of Houston’s Buffalo Bayou and built Freedmen’s Town along with its historic handlaid brick streets, churches, businesses, and civic leadership—a legacy that continues to shape the neighborhood we know today.
Today, we honor the history, resilience, and ongoing impact of Freedmen’s Town and the generations who built community through culture, courage, and care.
