Hello Friends,
Many have asked, "Can cats or dogs be infected by COVID-19?"
Friday, February 28, the World Health Organization reported that a dog in Hong Kong was quarantined after samples obtained from its nasal cavity and mouth tested “weak positive” for the virus that causes COVID-19. The dog’s owner has tested positive for the virus (SARS-CoV-2, formerly called 2019-nCoV) and has COVID-19. The implications of a “weak positive” test result are unclear, and it’s unknown if the presence of the virus is due to infection, environmental contamination, cross-reactivity, or even potential issues with the test itself. Hong Kong officials said the dog showed no clinical signs of illness, has been quarantined and is being cared for, and will continue to be monitored and tested to determine its status.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), no animals in the United States have been identified with the virus, and there is no evidence that dogs or other pets can contract or spread COVID-19.
Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital is continuing to see clients, as we always have, throughout the business day. We have not made any adjustments to our regular schedule. The following precautions are being taken to keep everyone healthy at Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital:
Examination rooms are cleaned and disinfected between each client using a medical grade disinfectant. This includes the seating areas used by client(s), and any surface areas within the examination room. This level of sanitation is our standard operating procedure and not based upon COVID-19. Our front counter is disinfected hourly amongst other precautionary measures.
The topic of social distancing, or reducing direct human to human contact, is common on news outlets these days and is being discussed by the World Health Organization and the CDC. While large numbers of individuals are never collected at one time at our hospital, we do recognize that some clients might want to create some social distance between themselves and others. We are trying to avoid shaking hands…but old habits are hard to break. We won’t be offended if you refuse a handshake and ask that you not be offended if we don’t offer our hand.
We understand that some of our clients, especially those at high-risk, may not want to leave their home and risk exposure to this virus. We do not want animal care to suffer as the result of human companions needing to make the choice to protect him/herself from illness. Therefore, if you are not comfortable bringing your pet into the hospital due to the COVID-19, the Oak Forest Vet Team will do our very best to accommodate. This would mean one of our team members meeting you in the parking lot after you call letting us know that you have arrived for your appointment. The team member would collect some medical information and your pet from the car and take them into the hospital where treatments can be performed. The doctor may call you while you wait in the car to discuss recommendations and options. After everything is complete and all questions discussed, your pet will be returned back to you at your car. We require that all cats and small dogs be in a carrier. If you don’t have one, we will lend a carrier to you. All large dogs must be wearing a leash and collar. Please feel free to call us when you arrive for your appointment 713-682-6351.
Sincerely,
Hallie Ray Moore and Oak Forest Veterinary Hospital Staff

THE BEST HELP EVER!
He's not only my GREAT nephew(I'm his favorite uncle) but he's got the rescue bug too!
Thank you D!!
We LOVED having my great nephew voluntarily help with my doggie duties Friday, Saturday and Sunday!
Thank you D! Uncle Shelby and sit.sty.walk.play thanks you for your hard work. Your cousins(fosters too) were sooo happy you came to help me! You get your volunteering skills from me. Right? Your love of dogs....me again!
OH MY DOG! Y’all are super awesome and I’m super blessed and honored by this wonderful charity.
My platform(if you will) is in memory of a very dear friend and mentor. Someone I’d love to be 1/2 of what she was. I miss her dearly in everything I do. Special songs....places we went and checked out. Stuff. Watching the cancer from diagnosed to all the ups and downs. Hard times, great times, Blessed with remission only to start the fight again. We fought together. But we fought harder and achieved remission again! She was again in remission!! Then, several months later it came back and she talked to me a lot. A lot of very personal secrets. We we’re like 1 person. And I promised her that someday for some reason I, in some way would make a difference. I absolutely lost 1 of the most special people in my life that October in 2010.
I look forward to the friendly competition with my co honorees.
REAL MEN SPOTLIGHT: Shelby Kibodeaux has been a fixture in the Houston animal community since adopting Houston as his home in 1992. His closest friend, Susan Kelly Broz, battled breast cancer for several years before she succumbed in October of 2010, and he is proud to be a part of Real Men Wear Pink to honor her memory.
