Texas Society for Neurodiagnostic Technology We are advancing the field of Neurodiagnostic Technology in the state of Texas through education and advocacy. The Texas Society for Neurodiagnostic Technology (dba Texas Neurodiagnostic Society) is currently a private non-profit company with subscribing members.
(2)

These members are technologists working in the neurodiagnostic field within the state of Texas. We are in transition to become a non-profit cooperative association of technologists and are applying for 501(c)6 status. We strive to be a catalyst for collaboration, providing education, state government advocacy, and distribution of information to assist physicians in providing Texas patients with the highest quality care in neurodiagnostics.

Mission: The Texas Society for Neurodiagnostic Technology (dba Texas Neurodiagnostic Society) was organized in order to provide leadership, advocacy and resources that promote professional excellence and quality patient care in neurodiagnostics. As a membership organization, we aim to advance the field by serving member needs, defining and endorsing standards of practice, providing innovative educational opportunities, promoting the profession of Neurodiagnostic Technologists, and building coalitions in allied health and other communities of interest. Neurodiagnostics includes but is not limited to: ~ Electroencephalography (EEG), ~ Magnetoencephalography (MEG), ~ Evoked Potentials (EP), ~ Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), ~ Polysomnography/Sleep Technology (PSG), ~ Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IONM), ~ Long Term Monitoring (LTM), and ~ Intensive Care Unit Continuous EEG Monitoring (ICU/cEEG).

Baptist Health Sciences University has an AS degree in NDT, and now a Bachelor's of Health Sciences in Neurodiagnostic Technology as well. Registration is open now. Visit www.baptistu.edu for more information. Click Academics, Neurodiagnostic Technology, then click the bachelor's or associate's degree on the right, then click Learn More, the curriculum plan. Also listed under the Bachelor's is the different credentials that will earn block credits for courses. The Bachelor's is completely online if you have an associate's already. The associate's degree requires 3 weeks of intensive lab at the university, and a clinical rotation. Email me if you have questions: [email protected] The BHS has course sin MEG, Autonomic testing, advanced neuroanatomy, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, and much more. Send me an email, and let's talk. ~ Maggie Marsh-Nation, PhD, R. EEG/EP T, CNIM, FASET

Texas 2020 Online NDT Conference ??

Several of us were wondering about the interest level in an online conference this year. We thought about offering pre-recorded lectures online in EEG/LTM and IONM. We are going to see if we can get approval for 12 CEUs.

The cost has not been determined yet, but considering the financial hit many of us have taken, we will endeavor to offer a high quality lectures at a reasonable price.

Just give us a THUMBS UP HERE if you are interested.

TO: NDT Colleagues, from: Craig Schweitzer

Does anyone in the NDT profession have a WORKING old Grass PS-22 (see photo) that I can borrow? If not, does anyone have a manual free-standing photic stimulator (non-software controlled)?

Reason ...

I'm doing a control study on optimal parameters for monocular and binocular steady-state visual stimulation. I am also comparing traditional signal averaged VEPs versus rapid frequency-domain Fourier analysis.

Under the proper anesthetic conditions, visual cortex (Area 17) sustained responses to steady-state dichoptic flash stimulation are easily recorded.

I believe ... these responses will not only indicate a grossly intact visual pathway, but (based on the temporal tuning characteristics of the retina), such responses can be used to separate magnocellular and parvocellular responses and thus predict if the sub-pathway needed for normal spatial resolution (normal vision) remains intact during the course of high-risk neurovascular or tumor resection surgeries.

In short, this is a hopeful recording technique that can be configured to run on any Cadwell, Medtronic, or XLTec ... and more importantly it may help to reduce the likelihood of intraoperative loss of vision.

This technique is an improvement to the traditional flash transient VEP that has been used for years in the clinic and has been attempted in several other surgical studies with little success.

I actually used a similar technique back in the late 1980s on infants with bilateral latent nystagmus and congenital cataracts with good post-op predictive success.

For those attending the East Texas ROADE event tomorrow:

Location is 800 East Dawson Street, Tyler, Texas 75701. In case your GPS leads you astray the building is at the intersection of Dawson and Beckham— crossways from the Papa John’s pizza place. I have included a couple of pics to help you out— a picture of the intersection and main entrance sign and a picture of the Wisenbaker Conference Center to guide your way.

Hope to see you all tomorrow!

An editorial musing from Craig Schweitzer:

Sometime back in the 1950s, a neurophysiologist (who was not a physicist) borrowed and mis-used the terms near field and far field from Electro-Magnetic theory in Physics.

In Physics, "Far-Field" energy is the description of how energy is propagated from the Sun through outer space and reaches the Earth. Examples are the propagation of radio and TV waves. Thus the actual term Far-Field does not even scientifically apply to neurophysiological recordings like EEG or EPs.

By definition, all EEG and EP recordings ... regardless of where they are recorded from and where their sources are located ... are actually NEAR FIELDS.

Now, in spite of the fact that they are just wrong, here's what Neurophysiologists actually mean by NF/FF:

1. NF recordings are delegated to those that come from sources in the cortex.

2. FF recordings are erroneously designated to responses that come from sources in the brainstem/midbrain.

Friends in IONM, I need some help. I know some of you out there work in the outsourced/contracted IONM setting. And, you are forced to wear the way-too-big paper scrubs, red cap, visitor badge, etc. As some of you know, I'm trying to fight this trend because I think it erodes teamwork and endangers patient safety. I'm giving a very important talk to some decision makers in the surgical world in a couple weeks, and I'm looking for some photos to drive home the point. The more ridiculous you look, the better. I'll need permission to use your photo in the talk though. If anyone has, or can get, a good photo, please send through FB messenger, or inbox me and I'll send you my email address. Thank you so much for reading!!!
