🌈 Houston City Hall lights will commemorate Pulse Nightclub shooting anniversary; Mayor's LGBTQ Advisory Board issues statement in memory of victims

HOUSTON - The lights of Houston City Hall and the 59 bridges will be lit in rainbow colors Saturday evening to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the deadly shooting inside the Orlando Pulse Club.

On this somber occasion, Mayor Turner's LGBTQ Advisory Board issued the following statement in honor of the shooting victims.

"This past year has shown us we cannot take for granted cherished ones still with us and to remember those loved ones we have lost. This is particularly true today, marking the 5th anniversary of the tragic shooting at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, FL.

"We take this time to remember those 49 beautiful lives our community lost that day. In 2016, our LGBTQIA+ community came together throughout the country in grief and in fear after the hateful and violent act. But we also stand together in the love of one another and hope for a better future.

"In the aftermath of the club shooting, the City of Houston immediately responded in solidarity with the formation of Mayor Turner's LGBTQ Advisory Board, naming 49 members to reflect the 49 lives and voices who were taken too soon on June 12th. The advisory board works to uplift the voices of our community and provide policy recommendations that will end discrimination and advance issues that improve our quality of life.

"Recently and historically, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed legislation designating the site of the Pulse Nightclub as a national memorial. While the pain and hurt will never subside, we continue to honor and celebrate the lives of these individuals who are and will always be part of pride flags that we wave at our respective celebrations, parades, and gatherings.

"We must not let their lives be lost in vain, and we must continue to persevere and take action by speaking up against discrimination and violence, spreading love and kindness, and remaining united as an LGBTQIA+ family." #pulse

Congratulations 🎈🍾🎊🎉

Congratulations 🎈🍾🎊🎉

We are excited to introduce HPB Board Member Laura Spanjian, Global Lead for Strategic Initiatives at Airbnb, in celebration of our re-launched Annual Fund.

As Mayor Annise Parker’s former Chief Sustainability Officer for City of Houston, she knows how important green space is to encouraging a healthy lifestyle and creating a thriving Green Houston Tx that attracts young workers and families.

Laura is the Chair of the Communications and Community Engagement Committee. She loves talking about the magic of being on the bayous, and encouraging Houstonians to try new trails, bike paths and bridges, kayak and canoe launches, dog parks, natural play areas, public art, and picnic spots. A founder of Houston BCycle, she and her wife Susan Christian and their two boys live near Brays Bayou and have fun biking over to it. “As soon as you are on the bayou you forget you’re in a city. It’s fantastic. Last time we were there we saw turtles, baby ducks, herons and snakes!”

The bayous have something for everyone, as well as being so family friendly. When her kids were learning to bike ride, they practiced on Brays, White Oak and Buffalo Bayou Park. And the boys have had fun taking skateboarding lessons at Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark, and then having a picnic and playing on the bayou. Now that they have a new puppy, Everest, there’s lots of dog walks!

But she also knows you can’t stop just at the greenways, as our city continues to grow. She is proud to be working on the vision of Beyond the Bayous, to not only create more accessible connections to our bayous and parks, but also building more active green infrastructure and trails so that everyone can enjoy equitable access to green spaces.

MOCA Awards $69,800 to Projects promoting Neighborhood Cultural Destinations and Resilience Awareness 🎉🎉🎨🎼🎭

MOCA announces the first grants through the newly designed City’s Initiative (CI) grant program. The seven inaugural awards will support cultural activations in neighborhoods and strengthen community resilience.

The redesigned program focuses on three crucial areas for cultural tourism and sustainability as the city begins to open up from the COVID-19 pandemic: Neighborhood Cultural Destinations, Conference Tourism and Resilience Awareness.

“These projects will appeal to residents and visitors. Houstonians can explore their neighborhoods and city with a fresh lens, as if they were tourists within their own city,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “I am, additionally, happy to support our creatives that highlight our vibrant neighborhoods and support the Resilient Houston Executive Order that I signed in February of 2020.”

The following projects are receiving support:

Drag Fest Houston by Rivkah French
Year-Round Programming by Houston Cinema Arts Society
“Labor Pains” by Sarah Sudhoff
“Singing Together: Qawwali and Gospel” by Indo American Association - Houston
Houston Asiatown Virtual Tours by Asia Society Texas Center
“Tether” by The Pilot Dance Project

Commemorating #NationalPoetryMonth, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Houston Public Library Director Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson, and our office are pleased to announce Houston’s fifth Poet Laureate as Emanuelee Bean! The Outspoken Bean is known as a performance poet, writer, compassionate mentor, and electric entertainer.

“It is my honor to select Emanuelee "Outspoken" Bean as the fifth Houston Poet Laureate, who I am confident will inspire Houstonians, from Northside to Sunnyside, in the form of spoken word,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “Outspoken Bean will demonstrate to the state of Texas and the nation that Houston is resilient, and that arts and culture are part of the strength of our resilience."

Outspoken Bean’s two-year term begins April 2021 and runs through April 2023. As Poet Laureate, he will work closely with the Houston Public Library and our office to implement his Community Outreach Project, “Space City Mixtape,” an album of 20-track spoken word and creative audio experiences of Houston and by Houstonians. He will also conduct eight workshops in Houston Public Libraries, and create videos and poems to share on social media.

Houston Public Library will host a special virtual program to meet and hear from the new Houston Poet Laureate Outspoken Bean! Remarks by Mayor Sylvester Turner and the 2019-2021 Houston Poet Laureate, Leslie Contreras Schwartz, will be followed by a performance by Apollo Chamber Players.

The virtual event will take place on FRIDAY, April 30, 2021 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public on Facebook Live!

The Houston Health Department is following the guidance of the CDC and FDA to pause use of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine out of an abundance of caution as rare adverse reactions involving blood clots are investigated. The department will await guidance on future use of the vaccine.

Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare and this pause is out of an abundance of caution. Only six cases are reported out of almost seven million doses administered in the United States. Texas Department of State Health Services reports none of these occurred in Texas.

This pause and investigation is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.

People who received the J&J vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider. Health care providers and individuals should report adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System at www.vaers.hhs.gov.

Since HHD primarily uses Moderna vaccine, we anticipate maintaining capacity and not cancelling appointments. HHD currently has only about 300 doses of J&J in stock, so the immediate impact will be minimal.

HHD used Johnson & Johnson for its homebound vaccination program and some community clinics and will use now use Moderna. Harris County Public Health announced the NRG Park Community Vaccination Site will switch to Pfizer.

A total of 507,864 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administer at Houston Health Department-affiliated COVID-19 vaccination sites, including the Community Vaccination Site at NRG Park. Of that, 37,453 were Johnson & Johnson.

Learn more in the CDC/FDA joint news release here: https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/s0413-JJ-vaccine.html.
