Following graduation, Mr. Owens enrolled at the Houston School of Law and received his law degree in 1934. After leaving the county’s employ, Mr. Owens became owner and chief executive officer of many different land development and title companies. Owens married Estella Winkelmann, a 1926 graduate of Alief High School in 1930. After the death of Estella Winkelmann in 1974, Mr. Owens married Mrs. Loula Bess Johnson Burch in 1976. Owens’ roots were in Alief and he usually spent Saturdays at his family’s farmhouse at the corner of Bellaire and Wilcrest. Owens died in October 1989. The Alief Independent School District and Board of Trustees are very proud to name the school after Laval Congress Owens
