Bill Willis’ work includes genre subjects whose sources include vintage cook books and images taken from his friend’s social media feeds to assemble an aggregate social and lifestyle fantasy. Willis’ works often embed a sly sense of humor into depictions of mundane subjects, resulting in sincere works that contemplate scenes from his internet searches and everyday life.

Bill lives and works in Houston, TX. He received his MFA in Painting from the University of Houston and BFA from the University of Texas at Austin. His work has been included in solo and group exhibitions at Art Palace, Houston; Galveston Art Center, Galveston; Circuit 12 Contemporary, Dallas; Hello Project, Houston; The Joanna, Houston; and Peter Makebish Gallery, New York. Willis is represented by DEASIL.

Our 28' Public Pin Strip at Southeast features studies and watercolors of Bill Willis. His search for middle values are calming.

Student groups in Art Appreciation made Anxious Objects on the topic of Spirituality and Religion- a common cultural theme through art history. Many diverse religions were represented in each group. One of these works is a Hangman's Noose that contemplates the politics of church and state, and the other a Catholic Rosary "with every gum ball being a prayer and every make-up sponge a mystery".

Mutant Roach Fever Dream
Drawings by Justin Varner

This series of sketchbook drawings chronicle daily ruminations on anxiety, discomfort, ugliness, and absurdity. Varner uses his sketchbook in the same way a journal might be used: a receptacle for tracking time, progress, and inner life. Here the artist allows himself to be as openly dark, gross, or ridiculous as he pleases. While these drawings function as art in their own right, they are also studies for future works. Exhibited as a curated group, this collection highlights recurring patterns in the artist’s thought process, content, and formal execution.

About Justin Varner:

Justin Varner is a faculty member in the HCC Southeast Fine Arts Dept. He regularly teaches painting, drawing, and 2D Design. Varner received his MFA from Indiana University Bloomington and his BFA from Lamar University (Beaumont, TX). His work has been exhibited at Dishman Art Museum, Rudolph Blume Gallery, K Space Contemporary, Grunwald Gallery, and Lawndale Art Center. Additionally, Varner’s art has been featured in the prominent contemporary art magazine, New American Paintings.

Quickly approaching: The 2016 Fall HCC Central Art Faculty Exhibit!

Celebrate the talented faculty at HCC Central on Thursday, SEPT 1ST, 5:30PM – 8:00PM in the Gallery of Central’s Fine Arts Center.

The event showcases the artists who teach at Central and it includes paintings, ceramics, drawings, sculptures, prints, digital work, mixed media, and installation. The artists showcased include Corey Ackelmire, Tae Ahn, Adela Andea, Bennie Flores Ansell, Megan Badger, Gladys Bel, Scott Carothers, Katherine Rhodes Fields, Masumi Kataoka, Sergius Kovalchuk, Clint Stone, and Bill Willis.

The Fine Arts Center is located at 3517 Austin at Holman, in Midtown. The exhibit will be in the gallery through August 29 through September 24. For information, please call 713-718-6600.

Important: Because of the construction on Holman, it’s a long complicated walk to the main entrance of the FAC. We suggest that guests park in either the parking garage or in the lot immediately behind the FAC, at Holman and LaBranch. From there they should be able to follow the signage and find their way to the gallery.
