How to winterize your irrigation system in Houston, Texas

Possible freezing weather next week & sprinkler systems.

Just a reminder, freezing weather is predicted for next week. Last time we had below freezing temps we saw a lot of sprinkler system damage in the city due to backflow valves freezing and bursting. I have attached a link to a video showing the proper protective procedures to drain the backflow valve and prep your sprinkler system for below freezing temperatures. Ether you or your landscaping company should have this completed before the cold weather gets here.

Stay warm and stay safe.

You should Winterize your sprinkler system in Southern Texas if the temperatures are expected to drop below 32 degrees. We do not typically have to worry ab...

Update: Will only be in the area of 3700 Harper

We have been advised by Public Works that they will need to shut off the City water supply in the area of Harper St only at 2:30pm for an emergency water main repair. They are expecting the outage to last about one hour.

04/03/2020

With more people home and going out to take walks around the neighborhood, just a reminder that it is against the law to walk/jog in the roadway in the State of Texas.

We have received multiple calls of pedestrians walking 3-4 abreast in the middle of the road blocking moving lanes of traffic, pedestrians failing to yield to (and yelling at) vehicles attempting to use the lanes of traffic, and people in the roadway at night/early morning when it is hard to be seen.

Please use sidewalks and watch for vehicles when crossing roadways.

Thanks,
Chris Engleman
Dispatch
Southside Place Police Department

Texas Transportation Code § 552.006. Use of Sidewalk

(a) A pedestrian may not walk along and on a roadway if an adjacent sidewalk is provided and is accessible to the pedestrian.

(b) If a sidewalk is not provided, a pedestrian walking along and on a highway shall if possible walk on:

(1) the left side of the roadway; or

(2) the shoulder of the highway facing oncoming traffic.

Public Works will be flushing air out of the water system by opening hydrants. Water pressure may drop but will come back up shortly after (20-25 mins). This has to be done to get the system back to full operation.

02/15/2020

Public Works has been advised of the Low Water Pressure issue in the city. A crew is working on the problem and will let us know when it has been resolved or an ETA on resolution as soon as possible.

12/28/2019

Water Pressure should be back to normal in 20-30 mins

Have a crew working on water issue, they advised that pressure should be back to normal in 20-30 mins.

Water issues on Bellaire and South of Bellaire

Public Works is enroute to determine the cause of no water and low water pressure in the area of Bellaire Blvd and South. Will send another message out when updated by Public Works crew.

FYI,

There will be a outdoor concert at NRG in the Yellow lot tonight which in the past has resulted in multiple calls to dispatch for loud music. With the cool weather and possible shift of wind from the South we may have that issue again this year. Officers have been advised and we will attempt to contact the City of Houston with the information if it becomes an issue.

Thanks,

Fire Prevention Tips Courtesy of the H.F.D.

As we pay tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the United States this Labor Day Weekend, the Houston Fire Department urges citizens to follow some simple safety tips, even though rain is expected throughout the weekend.

Barbecue Grill Safety Tips

◾Portable barbecue pits, charcoal grills and other open-flame cooking devices outside of a building should not be operated on combustible balconies or located within 10 feet of combustible walls or roofs or other combustible materials.

◾When igniting the barbecue charcoal, citizens should use a charcoal lighter, not gasoline. Gasoline can flash violently in and around the pit causing serious injuries to anyone in the area of the flash. A fire extinguisher or charged garden hose should be handy while the fire is burning. Check the pit frequently to insure that it is okay.

◾Hot ash and coals from barbecue pits and charcoal burners should be placed in a non-combustible container until cooled or thoroughly saturated with water, before being disposed of.

Heat Related Medical Emergencies

The Houston Fire Department reminds citizens about the importance of taking safety measures when outdoors to avoid heat-related medical emergencies, this also includes making sure caregivers "Look Before They Lock" for children left in vehicles. Also, remember that pets should never be left in a vehicle on a warm or hot day.

◾Before conducting outdoors activities and feeling thirsty, drink plenty of water and electrolyte-replacement beverages. Avoid beverages or food sources with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar because these can actually result in the loss of body fluid. Most popular sodas contain high levels of sugar and should be avoided when conducting strenuous activity. Avoid drinking alcohol the evening before conducting strenuous exercise as alcohol increases.

◾Conduct outdoor work or exercise in the early morning or evening when it is cooler. Individuals unaccustomed to working or exercising in a hot environment need to start slowly and gradually increase heat exposure over several weeks. Take frequent breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned facility.

◾A wide-brimmed, loose-fitting hat that allows ventilation helps prevent sunburn and heat-related emergencies. A tight-fitting baseball cap is not the best choice when conducting strenuous outdoors activities. Sunscreen also helps protect injury from the sun's rays and reduces the risk of sunburn.

◾Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that permits the evaporation of perspiration. Do not leave children, senior citizens or pets unattended in a vehicle.

Pool and Water Safety

◾Active, focused, adult supervision is the most important safety measure to prevent a water-related tragedy involving a child. The vast majority of children who drown in pools do so in the backyards of their own homes or of relatives.
◾Never leave a child alone near water, always watch your children around swimming pools
◾Enroll children over the age of 3 in swimming lessons taught by qualified instructors. However, swimming lessons don't make your child "drown proof." Remember, flotation devices are not a substitute for supervision.
◾Use approved flotation devices
◾If your apartment has a pool, inspect the fence and gate. If the gate does not lock or you find any other defects with the fence, report it to the apartment management immediately.
◾Bring a cell phone to the pool in case of emergency
◾Standing water is the #1 cause of slips and falls around a pool. NO RUNNING on the pool deck!
◾Always have a first aid kit and emergency contacts handy
◾Watch for dangerous "TOOs"- Too Tired, Too Cold, Too Far from Safety, Too Much Sun, Too Much Strenuous Activity
◾Pay attention to local weather conditions and forecasts. If lightning and thunder are nearby, get out until the storm has passed.

Teach Children these safety tips:
◾Always swim with a buddy
◾Don't dive into unknown bodies of water. Jump in feet first to avoid hitting your head on the shallow bottom.
◾Don't push or jump on others in or around water
◾Swim in supervised areas only
◾Obey all rules and posted signs
HFD also recommends parents and guardians learn CPR. Seconds count if a person drowns and performing CPR quickly and correctly can save their life. For more information on local CPR classes, please contact the American Red Cross , your local hospitals or medical schools.

School is about to start back up for the 2018-2019 school year. Watch those school zones and crosswalks for children. Also watch for buses picking up and dropping off kids throughout the day.

As a reminder, if a bus is stopped with it's red lights flashing and stop sign out, you MUST stop on both sides of the road if there is not a unpaved or raised median dividing the lanes. Failure to stop is a traffic offense and the ticket can be more than $300.

5 Tips for Driving in School Zones
1. Put away your cell phone. Cell phone use is banned in active school zones, and violators face fines of up to $200 in school zones where signs are posted.
2. Always obey school zone speed limit signs. Remember, traffic fines usually double in school zones.
3. Drop off and pick up your children in your school’s designated areas, not the middle of the street.
4. Keep an eye on children gathered at bus stops.
5. Be alert for children who might dart across the street or between vehicles on their way to school.

Today is the start of the 2018 Hurricane Season. We have already had the 1st named storm with more to follow if predictions are correct. Make sure you have evacuation kits ready for 72+ hours of food, water and medicines. Don't forget to pack a kit for the family pet as well.

It may also be a good idea to secure a location (family / friends) to the north where you can evacuate to if needed.
